Hi so, recently I thought of buying a gpu for my rig. Cpu : A10 7700k. The you I wanted to buy is hrs 960. But now I am thinking that if I could wait another year or half a year I can buy a new rig for gaming. With one of the i5 6600k processor and gtx 970. So what should I do, I mean is it worth it if I wait this long? At what point will modern games become unplayable on my current build with gpu?

Solution

Get an RX 480 coming at the end of the month for $200 and take it to your next build whan the time comes.

If you're playing with the iGPU, games are probably pretty near unplayble now if you game at 1080p and want high settings. The A10 will be great with the GTX 960, and you can always take the 960 with you to the new rig until you come up with more money to move to the 1000 series cards.

in a year, or half a year, you will want something else.
If you can't play now, just get the best GPU you can afford.
If you can play - wait.
In any case, you can/should wait till the July due to the release of new GPUs from AMD and Nvidia.
RX480 looks very promising for a 199USD card. It can also drive down prices for nvidia cards. And you can check the used market as it will be flooded with cards like 970 for half price. And then, at some point, when you will have a need to upgrade the rig, you can do it.
Just don't expect playing now over 1080p. The other important things in your rig are PSU, RAM and storage that you might want/need to upgrade earlier than CPU and MB.

But my cpu would be a bottleneck for rx 480 wouldn't it?

In most games you will see 2-3 FPS less than if you had i5.
So you can start with GPU and upgrade your platfrom later.
You don't have to. Unless you want to.

It would, but not to unplayable levels. One step at a time. The 480 will be a good investment.

Okay, so would A10 7700k - Rx 480 have better performance than A10 7700k - Gtx 960. I am just new to this gaming world so please help me out.

Yes. From 1.5x to 2x more performance on the GPU side. If the specific game is bottlenecked by the CPU, they may perfrom the same. Anyway, the point is moot seeing as they cost about the same and one will have so much more performance.
