So like the title says should I go with the GTX 970 FTW or R9 390 or 390X?

I am planning a build and will use an i7 6700 8M.

Will an AMD GPU work well with an intel CPU? Some people are saying I will have issues.

Considering that the GTX 970 is advertised as having 4 GB of VRAM but really only has 3.5 I think the R9 would be better choice as far as value goes.

Also what kind of PSU should I get?

I am planning to use a 650 watt EVGA PSU 80+ gold rated.

This one.

SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820156066 (maybe it will be in the build or some time in the future)

Also I have a cheap-o $22 Samsung optical drive I will install. My windows 10 is OEM and on a DVD. I will get the full retail version later on.
That is my build based on my selection of parts from Newegg.

Yep, 1070 currently makes great sense.

By the time you can actually buy one, things might change a little. You could easily be looking at $280 for a 390x vs $380 for a 1070. That will certainly be enough of a difference for many people.

That PSU should be fine.

I am buying what I can afford. besides from what I can tell the R9 390 will be more than enough. I think Doom calls for a 290. This is going to be a budget build. I know it's going to be over $1,000. But it's my budget. I can't afford to drop half that or more on just one piece of hardware.

I made you a PC build, I used the 390x as a place holder for the gtx 1070 as it will cost around the same price.

I could still cut a few corners and maybe make it $100 cheaper.

I think waiting for rx480 or gtx1070 is better, just put up with your igpu for 1 or 2 months and those card will be available to buy with a variety of versions to choose.

I would go for the first build + $90 for an SSD and $400 for the gtx 1070. Pretty similar to the build I posted.

What's your budget before the GPU and I will come up with something.

An insanely fast 250Gb m.2 sata SSD should cost ~$100, for that little money and the hassle of dealing with a slower system for months, then migrating or re-installing os and apps/games onto the SSD later... seems like a lot to put up with just to hold onto $100 a little longer.
