I recently built a new gaming rig, and i also have a new monitor on its way. Ben-Q xl2730z

Here is my completed build: it is really quiet/silent even when at load.

Z170 AsRock Extreme4
GSkills Trident 8GB 3,000

My video card is a loley GTX 960, not the greatest card, doubt it can handle 1440p well.

So i need a new card.

I want something mid range -$350-400 max that will do well with this 1440p freesync monitor.

Should i go with a GTX 1070 when they come out. I'm thinking like a EVGA O/c version. Only thing is I would lose freesync. So should i go 1070 no freeysnc. or maybe 1 or 2 rx 480's?

If a rx 480 can handle VR, surely 1 of those cards could do ok in 1440p, right? But do I worry that an AMD card would run hot and load and my build is so quiet now.

Solution
It's good you did your research and didn't expect Nvidia to support freesync. Not everyone realizes that.
An RX 480 would easily handle 1440p, and it'll give you that adaptive sync technology to pair with your monitor. It'll have a lower TDP than current cards, only 150 watts, so heat won't be as much of an issue as previous generations. The price tag of $200 means with your budget you could even CrossFire 2 cards later if there's just not enough power there for you.

Will a Corsair RM 650 Gold rated PSU be enough to handle 2 Rx 480? I've never done dual cards before, but my case is plenty big enough and my mobo supports SLI and Crossfire, so 2 Rx 480 is a viable option.
