Hi i have alienware x51 r2, here is the spec:
Memory 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600Mhz

Processor 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770 processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.9GHz w/Turbo Boost Technology)

Video Card AMD Radeon™ R9 270 with 2GB GDDR5 (Standard)

Hard Drive 1TB SATA 6Gb/s (7,200RPM) 64MB Cache

Processor 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4770 processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.9GHz w/Turbo Boost Technology)

Power Supply 330 Watt

And I installed another sad samsung 850 eve in it.

Recently my GPU broke and I plan to upgrade it to gtx 950/960. After reading few forums, I'm confused about the referenced design and the non referenced gpu.

will this GPU works fine with my x51 ?

And can you guys recommend the gtx 960 that works with my alienware?

Thank you guys

That GTX 950 will work, but it's not an upgrade. You'll get less performance out of it over a R9. A GTX 960 will only be a slight improvement, and in some cases will be a downgrade: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-270-vs-GeForce-GTX-960
The difference between reference and non-reference boards usually only matters to people that want to use liquid cooling. The layout of the PCB is slightly different. Non-ref boards often come factory overclocked.
As far as what cards I recommend, what is your budget, and what country are you in?

it would work, but would cause heat issues

you need the reference model cooler, because it throws it's hot air outside the case

this is a reference cooled gtx 960

My budget is around $200-$250. I am in Indonesia, but I have a friend In Australia that can buy the gpu for me if it is available in Australia.

As long as that will fit in the case, everything else will work with it. Check the measurement of the case from the inside back to the hard drive bay or other obstacles, and compare to the length measurement of the card.
I will repeat, though, that this is not an upgrade for you. The 950 is less powerful than your previous card.
