Hello everyone,

If everything goes well I might get money back for my G750JS (i7, GTX870m, 8GB notebook) thus I'd like to build a desktop as I do not carry my notebook around much and I love maximum settings and smoothness.

My budget is in CZK so I will just write down the HW I chose that fits my budget.

Intel Core i5-6600K (or i7 6700 non-K) but IMO higher clocked i5 should still be better

SilentiumPC Fera 3 HE1224 - cooler

GIGABYTE Z170-Gaming K3 - Intel Z170 - motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200 -RAM

SilentiumPC Gladius M35 - case

Seasonic SS-620GM2 Evo - PSU

WD Blue - 1TB - HDD

RX 480 - graphics. I know it is not out yet, but as things are 150% price here compared to USA, this card will be the only one fitting my budget and hopefully with good performance and overclocking potential.

Now .. the question is what monitor I should get.

AOC G2460PF - fits my budget, has freesync, 144 Hz, but "only" 1080p and TN panel - good one tho

ASUS MG279Q - IMO awesome monitor with IPS, 144 Hz, freesync and 1440p but almost 3 times the price of the AOC I chose.

I am worried about performance in 1440p tho. I might get second RX 480 later for CF, but once again ... CF only works great under DX12 and not every game runs under it.

Second option for me is waiting for vega (if they come out in October), getting one in 300-350 dollars budget with hopefully a bit better performance than gtx 1070 (I am no fanboy, actually got Nvidias my whole life but unfortunately as I said ... here the price is 150%+ for electronics so overpriced Nvidia now is a no no) and buy the ASUS MG279Q on the installment plan but well ... that would make me lose a lot from my months salary.

Games I play the most:

World of Warcraft
Overwatch
League of Legends

Any awesome SP worth it as MP is much more funny IMO. - Witcher 3, Gta V, looking forward to Mafia 3.

Thanks for any recommendation and help.

PS.: my budget is 34000 CZK which is 1400 USD but due to all the EU taxes etc. it is maximum 1000 USD or 1200 EUR with EU pricing.

Solution
Since you'll wait for Vega I'd say a 550W G2 would be fine. Good Corsair PSUs often carry a premium while offering practically no benefit over ones like the G2.
I'd say forget about 144Hz entirely unless you're willing to invest in Crossfire. Go for 75Hz-90Hz Freesync (some lower-end monitors actually run at lower framerates such as 75-90Hz with Freesync on, although all 1080p/1440p monitors advertise 144Hz).

You're right on the unlocked i5 being better for games. If you haven't already purchased the cooler, consider going with a Cryorig A40/A80 as those are very good AIOs and have a fan on the waterblock that provides cooling to the VRMs, increasing OC stability at higher voltages.

You can cut a bit of cost off the RAM as there isn't a noteworthy performance benefit in games from running higher speed RAM. You'd be fine with 2400MHz RAM.

Thank you,

The Cryorig is 4,5 times the price of the PC Fera and I am not into hard OCing, something like 4,3-4,5 Ghz max and I've read for that PC Fera 3 should be enough.

Also the RAMs are almost the same price here, no noticable difference between 2400 and 3200Mhz.

If I pick RX 480 I will definitely go CF later on when more games got DX12 or the requirements go up a lot. I guess after christmas. I still prefer one graphics solution tho so maybe waiting for vega?

What monitors do you have in mind? My dream monitor would be 1080p freesync IPS 144Hz but I guess nothing like that exists.

Plus I am scared of 75-95Hz freesync to be a waste as RX 480 (if strong as GTX 980 as advertised) should be over 100 FPS in Overwatch even in 1440p.

A 6600k at 4.5GHz is gonna put out more heat than I expect the Fera to handle. At least get something along the lines of a Cryorig H7 or a Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3 instead, those will provide more than adequate cooling and they're not much more expensive than the Fera.

Well the 6600k has an iGPU so you can still just build your rig now without the GPU and see what Vega has to offer. It's always preferable to go with a more powerful single card due to issues with multi-card support.

The Rx 480 will definitely be capable of 100+ FPS in games like Overwatch, but not in games like Witcher 3 or GTA V. Why is this an issue? For the same reason console gamers don't notice the benefit of 60FPS too much whereas PC gamers see 30FPS as horribly slow. When you play at higher framerates for some time, your eyes get used to the higher framerate and lower framerates become much worse to look at, so if you get used to 144FPS you may end up finding sub-100FPS framerates unpleasant. So it's better to go with a monitor that doesn't have a very high refresh rate (75-90Hz) to avoid exactly this issue.

If you're sure you'll do Crossfire (or pick up a much stronger GPU), then sure go for 144Hz.

Thanks once again, I guess I am gonna stick with 1080p 144Hz FreeSync for a little bit future proofing. Also placed Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3 in the build instead.

One more thing I am thinking of is PSU. With RX 480 being less than 150W maybe a high quality 550W PSU would be better? For example EVGA 550W G2. Also Vega that can compete with GTX 1070 could be around 150-175 with 14nm FinFet.

Dunno how good Seasonic SS-620GM2 Evo is tho I've read many reviews and it seems good but I consider EVGA G2 a bit more premium not to mention PLUS bronze SS vs PLUS gold EVGA.

Or maybe Corsair RMx Series RM650x. They are all basically in the same price category (5-10 dollars difference)
