Hi my nephew is looking to build his own gaming pc and I just wanted a little advice to help him along, he wants to play the latest games (doom, new call of duty, and minecraft). I was just wondering what sort of graphics card he should be looking for, as he's on a budget (£100 - 150). I know this isn't a lot for a graphics card but I'm not looking for high end, I just want it to be able to play these games and future games without any issues.

i wouldn't recommend r9 380x especially at this time if the OP would like a brand-new card. A power hungry card that gets hot and draws loads of power. GTX 780 is also not very different from r9 380x, in fact in the latest games these 2 cards will almost trade blows, gtx 780 pulling slightly ahead here and there. If the OP doesn't want to wait for Polaris, he/she should consider getting a used GTX 970, but yeah it is kind of a lottery about 2nd-hand, the card could have been used under heavy overclocks and stuff

Well, i don't know how prices translate to your country but i could suggest waiting for amd rx480 hit the market. Its announced price is 199 USD for 4gb version and it supposedly performs on par or better than gtx 970 which is a very nice value

At the end of June a new card from AMD, the RX 480, will be coming out at some $200 (so out of your budget but not by much). It may be worth waiting.

Otherwise, check this guide: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gpus,review-33382.html

You will see, for increasing price points, what the recommended GPU for gaming is. For your budget, nVidia GTX 950 or AMD Radeon R7 360 seem both like good options and they both fit into your budget. Once you start looking for them in stores, you might see different versions of the cards (they will have different coolers on them, or different clock speeds): you can recheck in the forums once you have narrowed it based on price and availability to a couple of models.

I forgot: no graphics card bought on a budget today will let you play future games without issues. It simply does not work that way, the graphics industry changes greatly from year to year. As times passes, your nephew will likely have to lower the graphics' quality in the games he'll play. Not that the games will look bad, on the contrary, they are gorgeous and every year more so, but he won't be able to turn on all the bells and whistles. But then again, he's on a budget, so 950 or 370 are his best options nowadays.

I agree with both of them. the RX 480 is by far the best option for the price. just wait for it.

nothing can be so called futureproof. we don't know what's going to happen.

but another option I can give is to buy used. a used HD 7970 will be very nice and can play most 1080p games ultra.
also you can look for used GTX 970s, which are slightly pricier, and used GTX 770 (watch the PSU) and used GTX 960s. they will fit in your budget better.

but something better you can do is ask what he has in mind. we could also help on the build. give the community a budget and needs for the computer, results will be pouring in. :) we might also be able to free up more space for the GPU.

well say good luck and enjoy the build when hes done to him! :)

Indeed the RX 480 . it will come at 160 gbp . Just 10 gbp out of your budget but it is much nicer to give us the total pc budget and we can focus on the more important parts of the pc .

if you cannot wait , your best option is the r9 380x by sapphire : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202183

If you are fine with second hand graphic cards then your best bet is the GTX 780 for 210 usd or 147.29 gbp :https://www.amazon.com/MSI-N780-TF-3GD5-OC/dp/B00DIH8OOQ/ref=sr_1_37?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1465651954&sr=1-37&refinements=p_36%3A-21386%2Cp_n_condition-type%3A2224373011

Yes. But the only argument with 780 is the ridiculous power draw
