I'm planning on selling my gtx 980 k|ngp|n and with the money buying 3 amd rx480s. Would I be worth it? I've always been a firm believer in nvidia but the rx480s have got me really intrigued. I'm also intrested in playing in 4K, but do not care about VR.

Solution
$600 for the reference 4GB models only. The 8GB models necessary for 4K will be considerably more expensive with 3x the power usage of a single card.

All the same, with Nvidia scrapping its support for SLI beyond two cards, the rest of the PC gaming industry is bound to follow suit. With an 80% market share, Nvidia sets the standard for future game development. No point for developers to waste time on 3-way GPU setups when only a fraction of a fraction of users will be affected.

So the drawbacks are: heat, noise, power consumption, game incompatibility, and the loss of the Nvidia exclusives (PhysX, Adaptive VSync, FXAA, MFAA, HBAO+, Ansel, etc.).

no one knows. no one knows. the card is not out yet. no one knows

what i CAN tell you is that gunning for a 3-way GPU setup is going to be a PITA. get the single fastest card you can afford. or if you HAVE to do crossfire/SLI go with two cards and thats it.

Wait for benchmarks. Scaling from 2 to 3 cards is never great and the thought of crossfire drivers is off putting but 3 way crossfire drivers is something Id run away from.

When the benchmarks hit I wouldn't be surprised if something like a 1080 was similar when 3 way crossfire 480's when it works well but how many games will really support it?

@sizzling yeah I thought that but they're marketing it by saying two of them in crossfire is better than a 1080 so I think they'll have sussed the issues and drivers so they can fully advertise it if you get me.

It actually might be worth it. If yall did watch the AMD Live stream at computex 2016, it showed Ashes of Singularity running on twin RX 480s and it was pretty solid, equal to the gtx 1080. Of course the benefits are that AoS fully supports the DX12 multi GPU setup, meaning you don't get any of that crossfireX latency junk.

However, only time will tell. From what I've heard, the multi GPU DX12 thing could also not take off, meaning you'll have to use crossfireX again. I personally would just buy a GTX 1080.

three 480s would be the same $600 that a gtx 1080 would cost

i have to say that FXAA, g-sync, HBAO+ are all basically available on AMD cards in one way or another.

you can force adaptive v-sync in the control panel but it's not the same thing as g-sync. it actually kinda stinks. AMD doesnt have g-sync but they do have freesync so no big deal there.

ansel is neat but gimmicky as far as im concerned. physX is also gimmicky, IMO, and i don't meet a lot of people who find it to be a deal-breaker.

FXAA may have been developed by nvidia iirc but it most certainly works on both cards just fine. it stinks as well. make the image blurry and i'd wager most people would agree with that.

as far as AO is concerned...nvidia has HBAO+ but AMD has their own version of "special AO". don't remember the name and not bothered enough to look it up but it exists.

anyways just felt the need to clear that up.

come on people, if you have in your mind a 3 way crosfire, you dont have money problems.

if you can buy a 3 way crossfire, obsolutely you can buy a radeon pro whit hbm.

amazing logic and reasoning here...if you dont have money problems then 2x gtx 1080's in SLI would make way more sense than the radeon pro DUO....if that's what you're referring to...it would most likely be cheaper and most definitely spank the pro duo
