Hard drive sparked and died upon startup. What could have caused this.

My friend ( who is very knowledgeable with computers) and I were replacing some dead fans on my desktop and doing some cable management. We plugged everything correctly back in my practically brand new Corsair AX860 power supply. Upon powering the computer I heard a spark and smelled smoke. We re checked cables and started up again. This time the computer had no hard drive recognized on the system however all the other components were working normally including the mobo. My hard drive is 5 years old and had been giving me failures in the past. I`m worried if the power supply did this or if the hard rive just "gave out". I would hate to buy another and risk my power supply ruining that and even more. What do you think it could be?
Thank You

You may have heard of Occam's razor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam%27s_razor): the power supply is probably not the fault, the HDD is probably not the fault, you and your friend probably are ;) I don't say this to make you feel bad, i'm not even sure of it, but it's the most likely explanation: at some point, one of you inadvertently and unknowingly did something wrong (like plugging the HDD power the other way around, or leaving something metallic in contact with the HDD circuitboard, or who knows what). It's happened to me too, a long time ago i fried an ATA HDD because i plugged the power cord reversed (you would think that because the plug is not symmetric, it would have been hard to plug it wrong: it was easier than i...

It sparked and smoked, and the drive obviously died.

The PSU you have is a very good one, and it probably still works perfectly.
