Should I get 1 GTX 1080 for 4k gaming or 2-way SLI GTX 1070's for 4k gaming?

First of all, I want to play the latest games and some older games at 4k. I was thinking 1440p but those monitors are surprisingly more expensive then 4k ones if you know where to look. There is a website called Newegg.co.uk that sells a 4k monitor for an affordable price range within my budget. I would also sell my current 1080p monitor.

So far I have a decent gaming PC at 1080p. My specs are i5 4690k, 8gb ddr3 ram, gtx 970. I also have a 500 watt PSU which I would need to upgrade for SLI as well as my motherboard cause I can't do SLI on that. I would get a cheap motherboard with 2 way SLI cause now Nvidia only supports 2 way and maybe a 750 watt PSU - would that be enough? So basically my question is should I save up for just one GTX 1080? Would that suffice for 4k gaming? Or should I buy 1 GTX 1070 now and then slowly but surely upgrade my rig one part at a time? First I will get 1 GPU, then a new power supply, a new motherboard, a second GPU, and finally a 4k monitor.

Which plan is better for 4k gaming? I want to have everything ready either by summer (preferably) or winter. If I shoot for winter because I have a nice long Christmas holiday usually then that should give me enough time to save up for all my upgrades. Also is it worth to get 16gb of ram and an i7 CPU or am I fine with my 8 gigs and an i5 4690k?

Many thanks in advance!

1. It's not a surprise, the desired 1440p panels that are more expensive than 4k models are that way because they are better than those 4 k models. You can in no way compare a laggy 4k TN monitor w/ a 3 ms IPS monitor running at 165 Hz w/ G-Sync and ULMB.

2. Two 970s in SLI are a great combo for 1440p. Two 980 Tis can't do 4k

3. The 10xx series brought Display Port 1.4 to the market. But unfortunately no DP 1.4 monitors exist and this is necessary for high refresh rates. 4k wont take off in the gaming community until it can do higher refresh rates.

4. At this point in time, you seem to be all over the place with CPU, PSI, MoBo, RAM upgrades. I understand the excitement that a ne card release brings but frankly, i think you'd...

5. Next time... always get a SLI capable and MoBo, that would make the choices you are considering now much easier.

Decent 4k requires two gpu's, the more powerful the better no single card, not even the 1080 can handle it

you are better off getting a gtx 1080 + 1440p monitor for no compromise gaming

4k requires multi gpus I have 1 1080 using on a 32" 4k monitor and plays fine with no lagging but the frames are kind of low in the 50s -60 I had 1440p 144 hz in the past I have to use 2 gpus to get the fps to 144 , in my situation I went and gotten a 4k and been satisfied of having 50s to 60 fps on it

frame rates will only benefit if you're into 1 person shooting games ,other than that you won't have a difference , i'm into 3rd person shooting games and other type of gaming and doesn't require the extra frame rates

i agree. i play in 4k on 55" for action games, mobas, rpgs, etc. But I go back to my 27" 1440p 144fps w/ gsync for Rainbow 6 and any other 1sdt person shooter where you are try-harding. Or sports games. FIFA and Pro Evo are both better at high frame rates for precision.
