Every time I play my flight simulator the VRAM usage is only around 8%. The GPU speed is 106% and the temp is anywhere from 54-77 degrees. is this normal, or an I not getting enough out of the card? If not how do I optimize everything. Also run a I6700K at 4.4ghz, the simulator performance on the whole is good, not as great as I expected.

Solution

install msi afterburner

you can turn on gpu core speed monitoring, cpu usage, gpu usage, temps for both in the OSD while you play

so you can see what is happening in real time
Ram usage only shows how much geometry and texture information has to be put in the GPU memory. On a flight simulator, i don't think you need to have super high resolution textures and very complex geometry, on the contrary. What really shows whether the GPU is doing its job or not is the GPU usage, which you indicate is even over 100%, so that's the key point: your 970 is working hard at rendering. Temps are perfectly fine, they just need not to go over 80 degrees Celsius. So i'd say you're getting all your GPU has to give.

However you say the performance is not all you expected: are the frames per second less than you think you should be getting? Is it choppy, stuttering? You can download FRAPS to measure the FPS. Check what it says during a simulation and re-post if you want someone to judge whether it's as it should... :)

I hear of others getting 60-100FPS, I average 30-40. No stutters, not choppy. I am happy with what I have, just wanting to ensure I am getting all I can from my GPU, and how to measure it. The sim has a FPS counter built in too.
