Greetings,

I finished building my new rig about a week ago and I haven't stopped having issues. I've tried everything I can think of and mostly every recommendation or "solution" I've found in forums and nothing. I can't pinpoint the issue and now I'm truly desperate.

The problem:

The computer works fine, everything is OK during regular work and usage. Then I start gaming. Now, the GPU is from my old computer, it's a EVGA GTX 670. In my previous computer I could run Dragon Age Inquisition with very decent graphics with no problem, watching a movie in the second monitor. I could run Fallout 4 with good graphics too, no problem at all. The problem here is that this computer is freezing, getting slow, I don't even know how to call it. It goes down to 1 FPS, audio crashes and then starts working again but everything is stuck at 1 FPS. I F4 or Alt Tab out of the game and Windows is the same. I've tried playing Wasteland 2 while watching a movie, video goes dark, the game (and computer) go to 1 FPS (at most) and the audio of the video continues.

This is the setup:

  • ■ ASUS Maximus VIII Hero
    ■ i7 6700K Skylake (BX80662I76700K)
    ■ G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
    ■ EVGA GTX 670
    ■ Crucial BX200 240 GB
    ■ Corsair Hydro Series H110i GT
    ■ Corsair RM850x
    ■ Corsair Carbide Air 540
Some more details:

I have 4 more disks, 1 SSD and 3 HDD (work, mostly).

I already started the process of sending back the RAM since the 3200 is an OC speed and I don't want to OC anything. I've dialed down the RAM to 2133 just to make it work, so I'm going for another RAM (I swear it's the only explanation I can think of, even when MemTest finds nothing wrong).

The computer runs cold, at VERY decent temperatures. The only thing that gets hot is the GPU which, as I said, it's from my previous rig. BUT, turning the fans all the way to 80% keeps it below 80° which is decent and within the limits of the card. GPU never goes above 40° (the H110i GT is wonderful by the way!)

I know the GTX 670 is not ideal (not to say an insult to the rest of the rig) but I'm waiting for the Asus Strix 1080 or the MSI Sea Hawk... Also, money.

What I've tried:

  • ■ Format the computer
    ■ MemTest: everything is ok
    ■ Downclocking the RAM (I'm using it at 2133 right now)
    ■ PCMark 8: Home test gives and excellent result
    ■ Crystal Disk Info: all drives look good
    ■ SSD Life: same
    ■ Changing the values of the RAM speed and timings (I admit I'm not really good at this, just tried by reading forums): nothing changed, except when I downgraded to 2133 the computer at least got stable.
    ■ Run Firestrike: crashed A LOT until I put the RAM speed at 2133.
    ■ Left everything in AUTO in the BIOS
    ■ Updated the BIOS to the latest version
    ■ Tried each RAM stick individually
I honestly can't think of anything else to try... Please, if anyone can point me in the right direction I will appreciated it a lot. I running out of ideas and getting truly desperate. I should be sending the RAM back on Monday, so I have to order a new one. I'll be looking at the recommended in the MOBO manual.

Thank you in advance for any and all help. This is driving me crazy...

Edit: Added 3 more things to the list of things I've tried.

Already done, I left it in auto, restored all BIOS values to default, nothing. I have to put them on 2133 for them to work.
