What the hell is going on with Nvidia's new GPU prices?

First of all id like to say that I am from Sweden and I am aware that GPU prices are different in different countries, but I also looked up the prices of Nvidia's GTX 1080 on USA (newegg, amazon etc) and the prices there arent even close to what NVIDIA said it would be ($599). On newegg I find non-founder edition cards with a price of $649+. On amazon I find GTX 1080's that go from $800+. I also find GTX 1070's on newegg that are $439+ (non-founder editions, should be $379). As a person that doesnt ever buy cards in the month of release I am really confused.

I was planning to buy a GTX 1070, but here in Sweden they cost $600 (a GTX 970 is $425 to give you an idea)! Is there supposed to be such a huge difference? Are these cards going to go down in prices soon? And finally: Are the non-founder editions of GTX 1070's even out yet (I see listings for them but the prices seem to be way higher then they are supposed to be)?

Solution

Whenever prices level out, which could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on supply and market pressure. The RX-480 becoming available in a few weeks from now might release some pressure on 1070 availability if 1070 supply doesn't catch up with demand first.
I think you're getting Founders Edition pricing confused... There are two FE prices for each card, one being the price of the FE made by Nvidia, one being the price of the FE made by a board partner manufacturer (like Asus or MSI). The higher FE price is Nvidia. Why they did this, IDK...

However, when board partners put their own spins on the cards (not FE), they usually crank up the price a little bit just so that they can say "This is our design. You want it, you pay our price." These cards are not the Founders Editions. They may be labeled Gigabyte G1 Gaming or Asus STRIX, etc.

Basically, Nvidia added a premium to their FE cards, but let board partners manufacture and sell FE cards for a lower price. This means that there is two prices for 1070 FE and the 1080 FE, four prices in total for the founders editions. I personally think that this was a mistake on Nvidia's end and it'll probably come back to bite them (if it hasn't already).

Also, when you're trying to determine prices, it's best to use http://pcpartpicker.com for that. It compares prices of the same thing, from different sellers and stores.

Also, NVidia does not set prices. They have an MSRP. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price.

NVidia designs the GPU (and supports it in software with drivers etc), then a fab plant makes the chip, then those chips are sent to graphics card manufacturers such as Asus.

(I don't know who actually makes the Founders Edition which is the same "reference" design that different companies make, or if that price is set in stone or not)

NVidia has to SELL their GPU's in bulk and the price is set for several months in a contract.

It's common to see a card launch like an Asus Strix variant, sell out, then companies jack up prices knowing the demand is high then lower them when it wanes. (note this is why we have monopoly and price-fixing laws because companies could make a backroom deal to keep pricing high otherwise)

At Newegg.ca the board partner cards are a little more. I just paid $909.00 CDN (after taxes etc. and exactly nVidia's announced retail with exchange) for a 1080 FE. Still cheaper than the 980ti I was looking at a couple months ago and at least nVidia told me they were screwing me in the product announcent. I will live with my decision unless these reported throttling issues are not addressed to my satisfaction.

So when would be the best time to buy a GTX 1070 (I dont want it cheap, I just want the price to be more normal, non-inflated)?

^^Jackpot right here. People seem to forget Nvidia is a business and how their financial advisers decide everything based on the laws of economics. Why would they sell them cheaper when they can make more money selling them for more money? To please their customers?

Ha :pt1cable:

basicly if you dont get them in the 20 seconds before they sell out your not getting on for under 300% the standard price because there is such a high demand
