Help downloading Nvidia driver

I just upgraded my old XP computer to windows 10. First, Windows Update won't install me a graphic driver and in device manager, the only display adapter showing is Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Even when right clicking and choosing update driver software, it is telling me it is up to date. When going to Nvidia Driver Download page, when choosing automatically find drivers, it find my card(GeForce 7300 GT), show nothing in the currently installed driver and says I have the latest driver available. When trying manual search, I can't find windows 10 for the operating system. Does this mean my card no longer support Windows 10 and I need to change it?

Solution

It certainly sounds like it. This is similar to how AMD recently discontinued driver support for anything older than the HD7000 series.

Just like everything else, there is a practical limit to how long hardware manufacturers can afford to provide driver updates for hardware that no longer generates revenue.

Never, ever let MS WU install hardware drivers ...

1. The recommended procedure is
http://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/43008-how-stop-windows-update-installing-driver.html

2. Uninstall any nvidia drivers from Control Panel / Add Remove programs

3. Use ccleaner registry cleaner to examine registry
https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

4. In the left pane click 1st box (Missing / Shared DLLS), click scan for issues. Examine each line in the right panel for the word nVidia ... if ya find, one check that box and then click "Fix selected issues".

5. Uncheck the 1st box and proceed with the same steps for each successive box in the left panel.

6. Reboot.

However, the 7300 GT is 10 years old... whereas Win 10 drivers exist for the 8xxx series, I haven't seen any for the 7xx series. With a 10 year old PC or at least 10 year old components, it was unwise to upgrade to Windows 10. My suggestion would be to roll back immediately. Otherwise your only choice is to upgrade the GFX card.

It's never a good idea to load a new OS on old hardware.

This driver does not support my card.

Also, the computer was becoming useless with Windows XP. I think the processor is fast enough to handle Windows 10 and I can add RAM if I need to. I guess I will need to buy an other graphic card.....

The card is NOT listed as having Windows 10 drivers.

If you manually search and put in the "7-series" then you get W8.1 and lower, but not Windows 10.

see pcpartpicker for graphics cards. Not sure if you play games, but a GTX750Ti isn't a bad choice for light/medium gaming (about $100+ last I checked)

Well, the most intensive gaming I will use on this computer is Minecraft. This computer will be mostly used for Word/Powerpoint, surfing on the internet, maybe install Eclipse and code in Java but else then that, there will be no intensive program running and anyway, as soon this computer die(or maybe before), I will build myself a new computer to replace it.

You can't mix W7 or W8 drivers with W10.
The reason it worked for YOU is because the 9800GT is supported. He has a 7300GT which is not.

Minecraft isn't exactly lightweight though. And frankly, once you start to drop below $100USD the performance of cards plummets. At $50 you might get maybe a quarter of the performance of a GTX750Ti though your CPU is going to factor into this as well.

Really? :)
Did you try? :
1. running installer until it extracts installation files to specified folder
2. closing installer
3. going to device manager and updating GPU driver manually by specifying folder, where installer unzipped it's files.

He's searching right. You'll note that the 7300 GT is not supported by the drivers you listed, at least according to your link:

My CPU is a Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20 GHz. Also, I think I should try to take a card with around the same power consumption, right?

CPU speed is irrelevant ...but other than Windows ME and Vista, upgrading an OS has always led in a decrease in performance.... fast enough is still slower.

But Mainly, I'm talking about hardware support.

7300Gt uses < 75 watts and a 300 watts PSU is recommended, same size as the 7300GT

They've made significant changes with Windows graphics requiring new drivers.

Microsoft installs a BASIC driver however he needs to buy a GPU compatible with Windows 10. Perhaps we can close this thread now.

*There are some inexpensive GPUs that are compatible, but it depends on what you are doing.

GT710 ($30 after rebate). Nice, non-gaming GPU->

GT740 2GB ($70). nice light-gaming GPU->
http://pcpartpicker.com/product/6s6BD3/asus-video-card-gt7402gd3csm

above that I'd get a GTX750Ti.

Make sure you have 64-bit Windows, but if you have 32-bit W10 and can't be bothered to reinstall W10 64-bit then get a 1GB version of the GT740 or similar (you only have 4GB for system and video memory. If you assign 2GB for video it leaves roughly 1.8GB for system memory regardless of how much is installed.)

I know it's an old system but a cheap SSD/HDD or a bit more system memory might also help depending on what you have and what you are using it for.

*I'm okay with 2GB system memory for my dad's laptop but any less and it would slow down a lot.
