I'm having a custom PC built, and have to decide between the 6800k and intel 6850k,

I plan to pair one of them with the new 1080 GTX, as I am finally trying to get into 4K gaming and VR.

I know what the difference is on paper, I just do not know if those differences actually warrant the price tag of the 6850k considering I only plan to use the computer for 4k gaming and vr.

Solution
No, they don't. The extra PCIe lanes are close to irrelevant unless you're trying to run quad SLI or a TON of PCIe cards (e.g. using it as a file server) - and you can't run quad SLI with a 1080. PCIe 8x vs 16x shows virtually zero performance penalty.
