I have a 2tb wd harddrive that recently started failing, at first it made my entire computer lag (like 10 minutes to load the login screen when the computer boots) ive since connected it to my laptop to try and get as much stuff off it as i can, at this point ive got the important stuff but ive still got hundreds of gbs of games and movies and stuff and its copying over at 500kilobytes-1megabyte (was geting up to 5megs a sec a few days ago) a second. I'm not sure what the problem is i didn't drop it or anything it just randomly went really slow. what should i do? just keep trying to copy stuff off like another 500gb or is there some diagnostics or fix stuff i could run?
I've tried using a different usb cable

Since your WD Elements is out of warranty and there's nothing important in terms of data on it, you could try taking it out of the enclosure and try running the DLG tests while it's connected internally via SATA. This will help us determine if there is any hope left for the HDD itself. Either way, I wouldn't trust any essential files with it, though.

Keep me posted with the results, if you decide to go with these additional troubleshooting steps.
Best of luck!
Hope I was able to help out even a little bit! :)

Hey there, fraza!

I'm sorry to see you struggle with your WD External hard drive! :( I'd recommend you attempt to connect the drive to a different computer and see how it will get recognized there. I'd also advise you check how the HDD is recognized in Disk Management. In case the transfer rate improves, make sure you back up all your data immediately somewhere else, before proceeding with the troubleshooting. I'd not take the drive out of its original enclosure as it would void the warranty. The SMART results from the DLG tool show that there shouldn't be anything wrong with the drive, however, the unlisted attributes in the other diagnostic utility look concerning. Did you pass both the QUICK and the EXTENDED tests from the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics tool?

Keep us posted with the troubleshooting!

Yeah ive tried it in 2 computers definitly a problem with the drive,
The SMART seems to show it as fine,
havnt tried the error checking on hdtune or dlg
in device manager its listed under disk drives as "wd ext hdd 1021 usb device"
disk manager has it listed as Elements(G:) says it is healthy ntfs.
it is making the whole computer go slow
im also noticing when it starts copying its at about 2 megs a second but it slows done over time and after like an hour its at about 500kilobytes a sec at which point it seems to stay at that like if i leave it on all night its still copying at 500 the next morning

Hey there again, @fraza!

Definitely do a backup of all important files from the WD Elements external drive and make sure you copy them somewhere safe and sound! Even if it takes time, it's essential to have a copy of your most precious files somewhere else as well. Once you do that, check how the external HDD would be recognized by a PC and track how it will influence the system performance there. If the issue persists, use the Data LifeGuard Tool to check up on the SMART status and health again. I'd also recommend you check the warranty on your WD Elements here and see if it's still covered: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=iQs5kL

ive given the extended test a go its 40 minutes in, it says time remaining is 2450:30:30 or so its fluctuating a little bit but as i understand it its saying it'l be about 2500 hours current sector 1069311 of 3907024895 looks like its geting better 52 mins in and estimate is 2050

Unfortunately, @fraza, it seems like your WD Elements external HDD is failing! :( I'd advise you to get in touch with our Customer Support if your drive is still covered by the warranty. You should be able to RMA it and get a replacement.

If you have any important data on it that is not backed up and it's essential for you to retrieve it, you should definitely consider contacting a professional data recovery company for assistance.

Hope this helps. Let me know once the Extended test is completed.

unfortunately its out of warrenty, the data on its not vital enough for proffesional recovery it just means i need to download a lot of stuff again and my internet is fairly slow, its been 2 hours and the drive says there is 2100 hours remaining so ive canceled the extended, it hasnt given any errors for what it has done in the extended, tryed the quick test again and gave the same error as it did before
