I was searching around trying to decide which GPU to purchase for my new rig. The 1070 came to my mind but it comes at a price point of 400(UK) eg. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/nda-10-06-evga-geforce-gtx-1070-founders-edition-8gb-gddr5-1920-core-vr-ready-graphics-card?owpid=2737475 I also found the 390x which offers nearly identical performance to the GTX 980
but comes at a price point of just 280(UK) (link for referance: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-asus-radeon-r9-390x-strix-directcu-iii-pcie-30-(x16)-6000mhz-gddr5-1050mhz-gpu-2816-streams-3x-d ) I won't be playing my games in 4k because 1080p is fine for me. I want it to play upcoming games and current games. Thanks

There is another factor here thanks to Nvidia's greed. Will your next monitor support freesync or gsync. Adaptive display tech means a 4K screen running between 40-50 FPS can look just as good as something blazing at a much higher speed for the end user. Even cheap no name brands with good panels are shipping with freesync as an afterthought as it adds negligible costs. TV makers and Intel are all on board with freesync as well.

This fact alone makes the RX 480 coming in July a possibility at $230 (8gig version). In crossfire, it will be between the cost of a single 1070 and 1080 but should beat both with not much more power draw which is enough now for playable 4K with gsync/freesync with judicious toning down of settings in a few titles. By next generation, 4K will be ready for mainstream with display port 1.3 monitors and 1070 SLI, 1080ti and 490/490X.

For you specifically, however, when do you plan on upgrading from 1080P and what is your current card? If you are not currently on a high refresh screen and already maintaining a decent FPS, wait. If not, 1070 and even a 390X/480 may be overkill. When you are ready to get a higher res screen, then is the best time to check your high end card options.
