i'm buying a new cpu and motherboard to go with it, since i'm on a low budget I'm getting the Haswell i5-4460 4-core 3.2ghz and a gtx 960 4gb factory OC, now the cpu's memory type if DDR3 as it says, does that mean my motherboard RAM type also have to be DDR3, what are the implications if they aren't matching?

Solution
Your CPU ONLY works with DDR3 and requires an 1150 socket mobo. Of 'modern mobos/CPUs, only the new Skylakes can run different DRAM DDR3L or DDR4 which is based on the 1151 socket mobo. Prior you have to go back about 7 years to the old 775 mobos, that were available in DDR2 or DDR3 or their hybrid boards that had slots for both but could only run DDR2 or DDR3

does that mean the motherboard should have DDR3 RAM only? or can the motherboard have something like DDR4?

That is totally not true.
For modern CPUs memory controller is integrated into CPU.
So CPU has everything to do with RAM.
i5-4460 supports only DDR3 and DDR3L type of memory (no DDR4 option).

If you're trying to find motherboard for your CPU, then you have to look for matching sockets.
i5-4460 uses LGA1150 socket, so any motherboard with chipset H81,B85,H87,Z87,H97,Z97 will do.
