how do i connect logitech z906 to my laptop for surround sound and laptop to my hdtv for video output? do i need a sound card or a receiver? also how does this setup differ from a htpc setup? which is better? buying 5.1 speakers or buying 5.1 home theatre?

i have a sony c series laptop (4 yrs old with shitty graphics card) with no sound card, only stereo output at this moment. i want to watch movies through my laptop with display on my samsung full hd tv and surround sound from logitech z906.

Kindly provide the link to the respective connector useful in the scenario.

Well , you can use Asus Xonar U5 it's a 5.1 channel usb sound card that gives you full 3.5 connectivity and a SPDIF port + mic and headphone jacks, you can connect the Z906 either via optical (SPDIF) port or 3.5mm jack , about the home theater thing if you using it in your room i think the z906 is better suited for that place , if you want to use it in living room i think the home theater with stand would be better.

@iXeon but would this setup through asus sound card give true surround sound output through the z906? Also connecting z906 to the sound card through 3.5 and not 5.1 cable setup (the rear, front etc cables) give true surround sound? if you could explain the cable setup , i would be grateful...

And in case i connect my logitech UE6000 to the sound card will it output better sound quality as compared to what im getting now without a sound card?

There are just tthree ways you can connect the z906 to the sound card:
1-by 3 3.5mm audio jack that each of them carry two channels : 1 for front left/right 1 for rear left/right 1 for center/sub
2-by the SPDIF (optical) port that carries all 6 channels (recommended)
3-by Coax cable that also carries all 6 channels (should be supported by the sound card but not recommended because it's not immune to EMF pulse).
so each of them has advantages and disadvantages but if you using this for a short length i recommend to use 3.5mm jack or Coax cable.if you using it for long length optical cable is better. and there's no difference between the 3.5mm jack and Optical- Coax just that they send the signals in a digital way and 3.5mm jack send it in analog way.
these connection are all to the z906 sub and then you get 6 pair of outputs that each used to connect the speakers.
a pair for front right a pair for front left and so on....:

and there's a port for control console in the middle as you can see in the picture.

and as i said true 5.1 happens when you feed the computer a true 5.1 source for example when you play a music that's been recorded in stereo you get stereo sound (although there are other modes for stereo in z906 like 3d stereo) but if you play a movie that's been recorded in Dolby or DTS the z906 automatically detect it and turn into decode mode. (be careful sometimes the movie is dolby 5.1 but the software has been set to only play two channels, then you need to configure the software to play the channels as input.)

I want to play the movies through my laptop onto the HDTV. Hence the doubt about true 5.1 surround sound output through z906. Could you shed some more light on the difference as to when i connect home theatre or 5.1 speakers to my laptop? Can i connect a htib to a laptop(again to play movies in my hard disk) and then make use of the htib speakers for surround sound output?

the movie can be displayed on HDTV though HDMI cable that's something else then audio , however if your laptop graphic card support 5.1 sound you can transfer the sound though HDMI too. there are two ways to connect the HTIB to the laptop , either via HDMI (if supported) or connect it via Optical or Coax cable to the sound card, about the true 5.1 it's just what i said ,the movies should have the 6 channels , only then you can hear true 5.1:

as you can see in the picture, you can check your movies and see if they have 6 channel sound , if they does it would be played in true 5.1 , in the picture above you can see that the file has only 2 channels, so it's stereo , you can check your movies by :
1-right click on them
2-go to properties
3-go to detail tab
4-in audio part check how much channel the movie has.
