I just built a new pc with an i7 6700k processor and i'm using a gigabyte z170 board.

I understand that will need to update my installation files to them work with current equipment.

I started with an ISO downloaded from Microsoft.
I downloaded their USB Boot Software and Ran It
I tried to install windows, but I got an error about missing optical drives
I found gigabyte Windows USB Installation Tool that is supposed to fix this problem, but the software fails while running
I have tried 3 thumb drives
I attempted to install, after running the gigabyte Windows USB Installation Tool, but the files were corrupted

I now get a stop error message:
Check for viruses on your computer remove and newly installed hard drives to make sure they are properly configured and terminated. run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption

please help me resolve this issue. thanks.

Solution
could be that the iso file may have been corrupted during download. first, try to use RUFUS to write your iso file to USB stick and try setup again? https://rufus.akeo.ie/

If you can, make a boot disc and use a disk drive to boot from. It would be easiest, being as you are having lots of issues with USB boot up drives. Not to mention, install Windows 10. It is way more efficient than Windows 7 and next summer Microsoft is stopping all support and optimization in CPUs for Windows 8.1 and earlier.

You might have to reformat the drives by wiping them. Sounds like they have data on them already from a previous build. If you change the motherboard, then the drivers used on the old drives won't be recognized by the new mobo.

does Rufus do the XHCI conversion?

Maybe I dont need the gigabyte software, which is corrupting the install files

how do I format the drive to erase faulty installs, and start clean?

Listen to the other posters, probably a limitation of the win7 itself not recognising your new chipset features and stuff. I don't know if there's a workaround for usb installation on z170 but maybe there is (there are tools to alter windows installations, adding additional drivers and such)
