Is it worth upgrading my i7 920 to a 8350 for gaming purposes.
I understand i would need a new motherboard, I would simply like to know from a performance perspective.

Check this CPUs comparison page on both FX-8350 and i7-920. Go by the complete page for complete aspects of the comparison. The details favor the FX-8350 but as "an upgrade" there isn't an important improvement.

The comparison here favors the FX-8350 even more. This comparison is taken from benchmarks done by users like you and I, and the results are sent in to a database that's regularly updated so the differences you get today may be different weeks from now... the only doubt I have is these tests are done under uncontrolled conditions, so the results are probably not 100% reliable. But still you can get a general idea of what you can expect...

The FX 8350 right?

No, it's not worth it, the FX 8350 is an AMD processor using 32nm transistors, which are partly responsible for the chip being hot and unstable. And don't be thrown by the clock speed and core count - it's really not that great of a CPU. If you're looking into an i5 upgrade, then you should consider it. But I do think you should replace that CPU, since it's pretty old.

If you have a socket 1366 i7-920 there are much faster 6 core Xeon cpus you might be able to upgrade to.

Look up if your board supports westmere i7-980X 6-Core CPU. If it does, the Xeon version should work too. (There is no guarantee and it's not officially supported in the cpu support list)

Buying a large water cooling kit or really large cpu cooler that you can reuse later if you upgrade would allow you to overclock your existing i7-920 more.

The FX-8350 is still faster than even the Windmere 6 core. But the i5-2500K is even faster. Big leaps in speed have happened since the PhenomII and first i7.
