Can you use different processors regardless of LGA model?

I have a computer that I use for both gaming and schoolwork. I recently got a new graphics card (a GT 720), and I was excited because I thought I would finally be able to play CS:GO. However, I heard that it is a CPU intensive GE, and I'm worried. My processor is only an Intel Core 2 Duo, and I know I probably need a new one. However, my processor port (LGA775) is much different than the one I need for a new processor (LGA1155). So, I'm curious and worried: can I use newer processors regardless of processor port?

The number after "LGA" (775 versus 1155) is the number of pins on the socket. The process and motherboard must match in number and format of pins - so in your case, you cannot use an LGA1155 process on an LGA775 motherboard. So you'd need a new motherboard to get the processor you're looking at. You may be able to upgrade to a Core2Quad that would fit your board - but at this point it might be better to just build a new PC as opposed to that.

and depending on your motherboard you may also be limited in what 775 cpu you can use. many oem boards (prebuilt pc's) limit compatible cpu's. we'd need your motherboard model to be sure what you could even upgrade to with your current system if you don't want to upgrade the whole thing.
