Hey all,

So I recently put in a new i7 and a gtx 970 into my build and encoded a 2.8 gb video in handbrake. While encoding my cpu temp both displayed on my board and in Real Temp was around 96 degrees C. Is this normal/should i be concerned?? Could it be my HDD that cant keep up?

Thanks!

Build:

CPU: Intel i7-4790k
GPU: Geforce GTX 970
System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
Ram: 16 Gb Ballistix
Drive on operating system: 2 TB seagate HDD
Drive encoding videos from: 3 TB seagate HDD
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 7
Power supply: 750W Rosewill

Open, well ventilated case with two intake fans on front, one outake on back and one outake on top.

The CoolerMaster Hyper 212 and variants are good and not usually very expensive. Price and availability of coolers varies quite a bit. I would browse through your preferred retailer and see what they have that fits your price range.

I know that, but is the heat sink that is meant for the cpu really not doing hardly anything? What is causing my overheating, it cant be just the cooling system

96C is approaching the throttling point. A stock heatsink should be keeping it below that even under heavy use such as with handbrake under normal circumstances. I would reapply thermal paste and reset the heatsink. It may not be making proper contact.

How is your case ventilation? What voltage is your 4790k hitting when using handbrake?

As others said 96c is approaching the throttle temp and isn't good to run the cpu at those temps for extended periods. Nearing 100c is too hot and yes the stock cooler really doesn't do that well for heavy loads like that.

What are your ambient room temps? I would consider an aftermarket cooler. It absolutely can be 'just' the cooling system. If those temps you're reporting are how hot your cpu is getting then regardless of whether it's the stock cooler, a good cooler, awesome cooler - it's not enough. The cpu cooler needs to be able to handle the heat the cpu is putting out and the stock cooler is more or less 'just' enough and nothing more.

Is the cpu running at stock or is it overclocked at all? Were any 'default' options on the motherboard selected that may have applied a slight overclock like 'turbo', 'power' or any other sort of profile? It may have been slightly overclocked without your meaning to. It would help to use a program like hwinfo64 and see what your vcore is, some motherboards use too much core voltage even at stock and it may help to manually set the vcore (core voltage) to a lower value. The more voltage to the cpu the more heat.

Using hwinfo64 my VID shows an average of 1.5. My room temp averages 50c.. Dx. Overall, and if anything I've been wanting and needing to get a proper cpu cooling system anyways. So lets hear it. What are some suggestions for cpu cooling for an i7 that's hot as heck. Hoping to stay under 50 bucks.
