I just put a brand new Cooler Master v8 GTS CPU cooler on my amd FX8350 CPU. When I start the computer I opened Asrock Extreme Tuning Utiliy to see my CPU temps. To my suprise, the CPU was at 70C while the computer was idling!

Note: Max temp for FX8350 is 65C. The CPU is also at stock settings. No overclock.

The FX8350 has a tdp of around 180 watts. And the cooler is designed to handle 250 watts. I went to the bios and disabled 4 cores to see if the temps would drop, but after restarting, the CPU is now at 65C!

I have been building computers for years now. I know I put a good amount of thermal paste and the cooler is tightened down enough.

I would love some help or advice. This is my only computer and I do lots of video editing for my job which I can't do until I can solve the problem.

Thanks in advanced!

Yea remove it and see how well your coverage is. Typical AMD you need good coverage. Try the X method. It's proven better coverage .

1. Did you remove the little piece of plastic on the bottom of the cooler?
2. Did you apply or apply enough thermal paste?
3. Is the cooler secure? Is it tight against the CPU?
Are the fans spinning and such? Does everything seem to work?
Also the fx 8350 is a 125w CPU and can peak 140w on load stock speeds. Make sure your mobo is good enough for it.

I included some steps you already mentioned. Just a recheck anyways the plastic is the most common problem.

Yes I removed the plastic cover. I have it in my hand now. I put a generous amount of thermal paste of a dot about the size of a pea.

The cooler was difficult to get on but I took about 45 min and made sure it was tight.

All fans are set at 100%.

I have an asrock 990fx extreme 9 mobo. It can handle the CPU load.

Thanks for the reply. I might try to reapply the thermal paste.

"i put a generous amount of thermal paste"

Sounds like you used way to much paste. Should never be described as "generous" and pee sized is almost always way to much. Should be a grain of rice or 2. Just enough to spread out and fill in air gaps. To thick a layer hurts performance.

Also sounds like you could have mounted it wrong. Shouldn't take mute than a few minutes.

Ryan,
I removed the cooler. There was a perfect amout of thermal paste on. I took it off and applied artic silver paste in the same generous pea sized way, and now 100% CPU load its only getting around 53C.

Thanks for the help!

Too much don't forget won't hurt the CPU as too little will. It sounds like he took 45 min and ended up reapplying the cooler without new paste every time, creating many air bubbles, causing it to be ineffective. I do not understand why most people think too much paste is bad. I tried it myself. I globbed some on and no dofference
