I have GA-H170M-D3H Motherboard, I would like to setup the RAID 1 on 2 HDD. So which is better in performance, on-board SATA3 port or buy a new RAID controller for better performance. and which RAID controller is best under $100?

Solution
For RAID 1 and 0 the performance is hardly noticeable. Onboard RAID is still kind of like a Software RAID as the CPU still managed the RAID. The thing about RAID 1 and 0 is there is little to no over head.

Now if you were going to do anything with a RAID 5 or 6 then YES get a RAID card.

The only other good thing about a RAID card is that if your motherboard FAILS you can move those hard drives, plus the RAID card to almost any machine and it will boot without issue. if you do onboard RAID you will have to make sure it is the same motherboard or a motherboard that has that same SATA Controller in order to boot properly.
