I have an AMD 9370 I am thinking about upgrading my GPU to the Nividia 1080. Should they work well together?

won't be a problem. just be sure your power supply is up to the task.

the cpu isnt good enough to keep up with it though, wasted money on performance you would never get

Your money would be better spent getting an Intel CPU, new motherboard and a gtx 1070

If you want to save some money and want to overclock get the i5-4690k with a Z97 motherboard. You probably have DDR3 ram you can use with this. If you don't want to overclock get the 4690 with an H87 motherboard.

If you want to go for roughly the same performance but newer go for the i5-6600k with a Z170 motherboard if you want to overclock. Or an i5-6600 with an H170 motherboard. Keep in mind you need DDR4 ram for this to work. That's extra dollars all around.

I would get an i5-4690, with an okay H97 mobo, seeing as the GPU does all the work. Go for the cheapest GTX 1070 you can find if your budget is tight.
