Hello everyone, I know that my question has to do with components a little out of date. I own an Intel Core2Quad Q6600 and currently it sits on an ASUS P5G41M LX2/GB/LPT motherboard which is a very basic one not allowing me to do anythin in terms of overclocking. Anyway I found a guy who is selling an EVGA 780i FTW SLI with nForce chipset. Because back in the days where the Q6600 was in its glorry and NVidia was manufacturing chipsets I was not very much into PCs, I don't know if it is a good motherboard to overclock my Q6600. If you are wondering why I want to do that then the answer is why not :D. Also I have read that NVidia chipsets are a little restricted for overclocking but since it is a FTW edition I guess there are no restrictions, right? And finally I have read that it is better to achieve the same frequency with higher fsb and lower multiplier (for example they prefer 375*8=3000MHz than 333*9=2997MHz) and I really don't know why. Please if anyone can help.
Anthony.

EDIT: The stepping of the cpu is G0.

I used ASUS P5E X38. I dunno if you can still find this cheap.
Faster fsb is faster but the difference is not really that big. I used 333x9 to get my daily stable 3GHz.
Please note than OC result differs from processor to processor.

Q6600 falls behind too far to catch up to the newer processors.
The OC will not bring you much, I dumped my Q6600 already in October 2014.

I think, it is better to start planning for a new rig rather than to OC your Q6600.

Acctually it is not my main PC, I have a 4790K with a 980Ti Classified as main and a 8350 with a 7970 GHz edition as secondary. I just found this sysytem ready to be thrown away into a dumpster so I picked it up for free. And now I am spending just 30 euros for a motherboard to start my overclock experience.

So even if with both settings you have the same speed, in one case the system is a little bit faster.

You will need a decent fan (mine was Zalman CNPS9500), Q6600 is quite hot and also a good enough PSU to hold the OC.
I dunno if you can really have everything for €30, even from eBay.
Assuming you have a strong enough GPU (mine was HD6850) and has already an SSD (mine was 120GB Crucial M4), Q6600 is still ok as long as you do not play any new AAA games starting from 2014.
BTW, my P5E X38 was a really good OCer.

I sent my Q6600 to a friend of mine in Cameroon for free. Q6600 does not cut it anymore for new AAA games but also a pity to be thrown away. The rig is still being used there.

I have a 500W psu from coolermaster it is the G500 and no I am not planning on gaming. This is used for backup my two main PC's, general internet use and as HTPC rig. The gpu is a Gigabyte HD4550 which has almost none power requirements, so the only thing drawing power is the cpu. As for cooling I have the Scythe Ninja 2.

Yes I know because I am using it right now. I want to overclock it because I want to get the maximum out of this cpu and I want to "slowly enter the world of overclocking" as I have no previous experience on it. This is the main rerason plus I found that deal with this EVGA motherboard which is better than the current one. If you are wondering why I am not doing this with the 4790K or the 8350, it is just because I don't need any more power from these systems (yet), as they perform extremely well in all domains and the Q6600 is now the overclock experimental pc.
