Hello,

First time posting here and for all intents and purposes a complete novice PC builder. About 3-4 years ago I bought a second-hand home built rig for about £400. Apart from replacing the crappy PSU the thing works well.

However, the system is quite dated now and I would like to upgrade.

I am happy to take advice on any parts in the system, but I'm mainly looking to upgrade:
GPU to play RTS games also Witcher III, GTA V etc on High/Ultra
1080p 24-27" 120-144Hz monitor
maybe MOBO/RAM?

-----------------
Current System

MOBO Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 ATX LGA1155

CPU Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor
(8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz)

RAM Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

GPU Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 1GB Video Card

PSU EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Case Cooler Master Storm Scout ATX Mid Tower Case
-----------------

Budget/Needs

I will look to make these upgrades over time so no specific budget but approximately £150 on GPU, £100 on monitor, £100 on MOBO and RAM

I use this rig mostly for gaming. Specifically, I want to improve the performance of RTS games like Total Ware (Warhammer), wanting to get up to at least High quality if possible. I also play Witcher III, GTA V, Fallout 4, stuff like that.

Thoughts

1) For GPU my thought was to wait for the RX 480 if it's around £160 in the UK
2) Monitor - whatever pops up on ebay/locally
3) Upgrade to a MOBO that supports all my other peripherals and supports an upgrade to DDR4

Questions

1) What's going to improve RTS games the most/should I invest in first? Is my CPU or RAM choking the quality or is it the GPU?
2) Will I be able to support an RX 480 with this rig (if I upgrade MOBO?)
3) Any recommendations of MOBOs and RAM for this kind of rig

Looking forward to hearing your feedback and advice.

PS. Sorry for the long post, hope I made it clear!

Honestly, all you really need is a better GPU, and maybe a decent aftermarket cooler, so you can overclock that 2600k, a bit. 4.0ghz should be doable, with just a multiplier bump, to 40. Maybe grab a GTX 1070, once the prices settle a bit, and a decent aftermarket cooler, like a cryorig h5, or H7.

Hey logainofhades, thanks for the advice that's easy enough! I've not tried CPU OCing but do have the Akasa Venom Voodoo Cooler which I think will do the job. Will keep an eye out for GPUs.
