I know this gets posted a lot, but I can't find a definitive answer.

I'm using Realtek HD Audio for my surround sound attempt. I have a receiver that's transmitting it, and I'm using a TV for video. HDMI for it all.

Which is the correct series of connections that must be made to get true 5.1?

Specs:
-FX 6300 at 4.2 ghz
-GTX 970
-8GB RAM
-Gigabyte 970a-UD3P Mobo
-Windows 10

You may find that while using an HDMI cable to your you might only get DVD's to play in a true 5.1 surround mode.
Why? Because DVD's have either Dolby Digital or DTS encoded surround sound which can be decrypted by the received for true 5.1

Unfortunately games don't code the audio to Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 in real time, so games and other audio will not play in surround sound even if the game has surround sound.

To get the real 5.1 for games it's best to connect to the 3 audio outputs for R/L - Rsurround/Lsurround - Cent/Sub
(On the computer it will be 3 small holes that would fit headphones.) 3.5mm
(Connect those to your receiver. You may need adapters or adapter cables to go from 3.5mm jacks to a common RF jacks (on your receiver).)
(Not all receivers will have the type of inputs needed. On the other hand some may not need an adapter cable, which if that was the case, you would just need 3 cables resembling a headphone plug on both ends.)

I've used both methods. I like the 3 separate connections because it will play the surround the way the games should be heard, but I opted for HDMI and a virtual surround mode because my receiver always has radio interference when using those and HDMI is digital so there is no radio interference.
