So hello guys, I just have one question about screen resolution.

Is it good to force a screen resolution higher than the native resolution?
Cause I have a 1366x768 monitor and I want to make it to 1920x1080.
And I found out that you can change the resolution higher than the native screen resolution thru NVIDIA Control Panel, but the question is;

Does it have any bad effects to my PC/Hardware (will I have a hardware failure) if I force my screen resolution to higher resolution?

Thanks in advance.

Solution

Digital video knows about resolution, so shouldn't be a problem. Analog video doesn't know about resolution, and instead relies on scan rates to fit the picture into the screen. If you're driving your monitor with an analog VGA connection, there's a very small chance doing this could damage or destroy your monitor. This was true during the CRT days which used electromagnets to control scan rates, and selecting too high a scan rate could destroy the mechanism. I'm pretty sure you can't do that with LCD monitors and it'll just give you a "scan rate out of range" error, but I can't say for certain.

Since video players will dynamically rescale a...

Since video players will dynamically rescale a 1080p image to fit your screen resolution, I assume you want to do this to get some more desktop space? Have you considered one of the oversized screen apps instead? They keep your monitor's native resolution so things like text remains sharp, but use a virtual desktop space larger than your monitor. When you hit the edge of the screen with your mouse, it auto-scrolls in that direction. This used to be a standard feature in Windows XP, but Microsoft removed it for some reason. Pity since it had its uses.
