i have a windows xp (yes i know its not supported by microsoft any more) computer that keeps making noise when its not being used, does anyone know what could be the cause? the computer has been well maintained, but for some reason it seems that when the computer is not being used the fan turns on and makes a lot of noise. Its an hp computer by the way

Maybe there's something alive in it? :) Open it and see what fan is spining while turned off. Depending on what it is that is making noise (let us know), you might be able to simply disconnect it. Or, instead of simply turning off Windows, wait for Windows to be off and then unplug.

its an hp computer it can't be open unless taken to hp or somewhere that can open it up. i'm pretty sure its a fan, its spins for a long period of time then turns off, it does that off and on when its not being used. the sound that i am talking about is that the computer sounds like its over heating but its not.

How old is it? If it's more than two years old, there's no guarantee on it anymore, and anyone with a screwdriver can open it. Anyways, if you don't want to open the case, unplug the PC (or, if the PC's PSU has a switch, turn that switch off) when finished using it and windows is shutdown. It's far from the ideal solution, but it will solve the noise problem...

if i do that and there is dust it will blow it further into the computer which may cause other problems
