Is there really a point to glass screen protectors?

My last phone was an iPhone 4s I had for three years before I cracked or scratched my screen, right? I now have an iPhone 6, only for about a year, and I've gone through 3 glass screen protectors? You would assume that phones get stronger over time, so are these protectors really "saving" my phone screen, or are they just creating an illusion, and really are much easily broken than my phone? Should I even bother going out and getting a new one? I live on the coast, so the beach's sand may be a problem, but it never affected my old phones?

Solution
Yes they break easier since they are not made out of the same strong glass as the screen. Just get them online shipped from China, about 1/5th the cost of buying from a store. They do help the screen a bit, do you want to take the risk of not having a $3 protector on and having it crack a $100 screen when you don't or just have it on and have it maybe do nothing?
