Would a Gtx 980 ti setup be good today for a 4K and VR gaming?

Hello, I know that people normally say that it's better to just buy the single most powerful GPU that you can afford and I was planning to buy a single gtx 1080 but then I found an awesome deal today for a new $410 EVGA gtx 980 ti classified. So I decided to buy two of them for Sli but then I wondered about recent complaints for the lack of sli support in recent games. I at first wanted a gtx 1080 but I understand that I don't need the best of the best but I would like to have something that works. I know that 980 ti performs in 4k fairly well but would a 980 ti sli be able to render images for each eye in a VR headset like the gtx 1080 claims to do? All in all, if the 980 ti sli doesn't workout though then I guess I could sell one of mine when they arrive and wait to upgrade later to a 1080 ti or something though. Thank you for your time.

Here is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/V7YwPs

By the time you want the 1080ti, probably going to be at a 1200$ proce point, those 980tis will be very cheap, maybe 150-200 max. I reccomemd you since, the 1080 is better than a 980 SLI, I mean and also leaving room for another card, it's better to go with a 1080 and later get another.

So I say 1080, no SLI 980tis.

Thank you for your feedback. I thought $410 was a crazy deal and had to jump on it, but maybe I'll just just keep one for now and upgrade later, or return/cancel both of them and wait for the gigabyte gtx 1080 xtreme. I guess I'll think some more about what I'll do.
