I've currently just tried to swap my mybook 3tb hd to a internal cause i didn't want the external case on my desk. So i opened it and did the usual. Now i've noticed i can't see my drive letter or anything. I've read a few like posts and my has some variants or maybe not. So i'm just trying to get my data back and be able to use my hd on this pc. i've not reformatted it and nor do i plan to until i get my data back. Is it a lost hope or is there something i can do? Thanks for any help.

Solution
I've been researching this encryption and i've found the solution for anyone searching as much as i did and i hope this helps someone search to recover lost data.....granted you didn't reformat your drive beforehand.

All you need to do, is to replace the PCB sata control board (inside your enclosure, attached to the HDD,that has the power and sata cable ports), and swap the PCB-sata control board from the old board to the new one. Then! you can access the files !!! , as long as the encryption codes on the disk and new chip match.

The chips have model codes for each Rev version.(Rev's tell you which type of encryption you have) For instance, mine is "4061-705094-001 Rev. AH"
When matching the codes up, ensure that your FIRST 2 ROWS of...
Hey there, sneak0wns!

Unfortunately, taking the HDD out of the WD My Book enclosure voids the warranty, so you won't be able to RMA it even if it was within the warranty period. :( Another thing that would prevent you from accessing your data while the HDD plugged via SATA (internally) is the hardware encryption! It won't allow you to access the files on the drive, unless it's within the original enclosure or an identical one.

If these files are so important to you, you should definitely consider contacting a professional data recovery service for assistance. They would be your best bet on getting those files back.

Can you share more details about the issues you have encountered with the WD My Book external drive?

Sure , i just basically Took the HD out of the enclosure and then installed as you would any normal install. i've recently tried to re-set up the drive as it was in the enclosure but to no avail. Connected the pcb board and all.it shows up in the Device managers and system tray but not in explorer. Still nothing...

I've read alot of article about this issue. But As i fear my data is lost.... One thing i wonder is. If i've not reformatted the HDD after this , the data should still be intact, correct? Is there any other means of breaking the encryption as is or am i'm still in the void? Also why do they do this to owners of this particular drive? Most of heard is that WD just wishes to line its pockets for extra cash. And not give much concern for the users data. Surely they must be some way to override this?

Thanks again , and let me know if there's anything else i can provide to further my cause. = )

When matching the codes up, ensure that your FIRST 2 ROWS of digits & REV are the same. The last 3 digits don't have to match.

As far as the new chips goes, you can buy a chip from a supplier in Hong Kong for anywhere from 30-on up. You can find them around ebay but not as quickly as this page offers. Especially if you need to recover your data ASAP. http://parts.com.hk/1/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_2_3&sort=20a&page=7

Hope this helps guys, Lastly , i'm not responsible if this doesn't work for you.

Solution
Hey there again, sneak0wns!

Just keep in mind that tampering with the HDD hardware physically by yourself is highly risky for your files. I do hope it works for you! Just be extra careful!
As for the hardware encryption itself, it is incorporated in some of our external HDD models for extra data protection, which is aimed to be in favor of the customer, actually. You can check all the external desktop models here, and all the external portable hard drives here. As you can see the only models that don't incorporate password protection & hardware encryption are the WD Elements.

Either way, keep us posted with the DYI data recovery methods!
Best of luck! :)
