Hello gal and boys, I am planning to blow up some savings again, after almost 7 years now my PC served me really well, now i decided to keep up with modern games with my aging pc, and wanting it to run smoothly, such as skyforge, dirtybomb, Battlefield, and games that'll be release in the future, in range of 2-4 years.

here's my spec that needs upgrading.

CPU = AMD Phenom II X4 910 2.60ghz,4000 MHz HT3 from hp model : http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01859815

GPU = Radeon HD XFX 687a (legacy series)

What would be the best cpu/gpu upgrades for these two items pair with a new motherboard, the rest i'll figure out.

I am also eyeballing the new AMD gpu, or I might do some adjustment if it turns out to be low performing gpu compare to gtx 1070.
Also will it fit inside the Cooler Master HAF 912?

My current budget is about $550-$600.

Solution
You don't need to replace all at once.
Start with platform (CPU+MB+RAM), continue to GPU.
for 700$ for CPU+MB+RAM+GPU you can have very decent setup. though i'd recommend wait a bit and get GTX 1070 for ~400USD.
That will give you few years of quality gaming.
From the parts I suggested earlier, you can pick a 50$ cheaper MB if you really on tight budget. I picked the parts that I'd personally buy with option to overclock and thus prolong the system lifespan by a couple of years.
You should of just titled it "Replacing my System" as your ripping everything out.

If your doing a new build you might as well just go Intel Skylake.

Graphic cards wise you will have to take a measurement of the space you have due to the drive bay cutting off the rest of your clearance, that unless the drive bay is detachable.

the only way to fit in this budget is picking an i5 for ~200USD + z170 MB for ~130 USD + 16GB ram + ~200USD graphics card.
You have to verify that your power supply can run that.

Something like the below + GPU and CPU cooler
