I plan on building a PC and don;t know if I should get the R9 390 or GTX 970

My budget is $300 and these two cards fall right in that range. I do not want opinionated answers, i would like facts and which one is better for gaming, cooling, performace, etc. Thanks a lot

Wait until GTX1070 and RX480 are available and reached the normal price.
It is better to wait and not buy any GPU in the next 1-3 months.

RX480 should cost USD200 with the performance level somewhere between GTX970 and GTX980.
For about USD300-400, GTX1070 is as strong as a Titan X.

Yea i just heard about the r9 480 being released on June 29th. Im also watching the PCGamingShow at E3
