I've been working on a friend of mines computer for several weeks and can't figure out the issue. Here's what's happening, the computer randomly shuts down when he's using it. When he turns it back on it will work some of the time, but eventually the desktop image loads but there is nothing else (no mouse, icons, taskbar, etc...) If I unplug it and remove all peripherals and plug it back in it works again.

I thought it might be Carbonite or some driver issue so I ran snappy drivers and updated all the drives and ran tweaking toolbox thinking it might fix it but no luck. Any ideas?

Solution
Almost always the first thing I look at in these instances is the power supply. It's generally some ready to light on fire 5 dollar hunk of metal and swapping it out for a cheap Antec basiq or something cures it. I'd say 9/10 times this kind of thing is PSU. The other 1/10 is a failing mobo/hard disk/ video card etc.
