Hi there, so I've been out of PC Hardware for about 5 years now, and even back then it was done through Dell as it didn't make much difference cost wise, but today I've been offered a GTX 970 (what I'm dribbling about a bit)

Right now I have a Dell XPS 8300 from 5 years ago. It has a Intel i5-2500 CPU 3.3GHZ, 8GB of ram, and has a GTX 560ti gfx card.

I'm presuming the majority of it will be brilliant to run top spec games at 1080p but what spec would i need for 4K? Gaming would be a bonus if possible atall, but for media, is it possible to have it split I'm such a way where you get 4k media only.

I've been told I may need a new motherboard (just somebody mentioning it off in comment). But what else would i need? More ram? 2x gfx cards?

Many thanks for any help or advice! I sure would love to get back into PC gaming!

You may 1080p gaming you will likely need new build altogether. The z170 platform with a core i5 6600k would be ideal. For 1080p, a gtx 970 or 390 or better is ideal. For 4k, I can only recommend gtx 1080 as its the only single card capable of gaming in 4k high settings in pretty much any game. For ram, I would get 16 gb DDR4. I would advise against dual card setups as the problem with it has gotten worse with dx12.
