I just recently (today) upgraded from a hdd to an sdd, I installed windows 10 and everything was going smoothly until i started to move my steam folder over.

Following what https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129 said i copied my steamapps folder onto the new ssd from my old hdd and reinstalled steam. My Question now is, I reformatted my old Hdd and want to move half my steam games to that to free up room on my new ssd. After about 2 hours of looking online and just plain messing with folders ( still have a backup of everything) I cant get steam to recognize the games in the Hdd while steam is installed on the sdd. Any help either it be a workaround or official steam would be helpful.

Solution
Copy the steam directory to the HDD, then reinstall the game and tell it to install to the same location and it should find your local files and use them. If you don't specify a destination though it will default to the main steam folder on C:

You can delete the game files from the c: drive once you have it working right and because there's a copy on the HDD you can always put it back if required.

That's basically what I did.
Step 1 copy the whole Steam directory somewhere as a backup
Step 2 install Steam on the C: drive
Step 3 find the game files for anything I want on the C: drive in the Steam folder and copy them to the new Steam directory on C: - Like you showed on your link
Step 4 copy the whole old Steam directory onto the D...

While yes this would be the simplest way, it would take the most time as i have close to a dial up connection, and have to go offsite to download most if not all games.

Then backup 1 small game and re-install it via steam. Then use WinDiff to see what files were modified and how
http://www.softpedia.com/get/File-managers/WinDiff.shtml
If it is a local file setting and not a registry entry this will show what to edit.

Step 4 copy the whole old Steam directory onto the D: drive (or whatever letter), delete the games already on C: if you want
Step 5 from the library install one of the games and specify the D: drive steam folder as the destination

I find once Steam is aware of the 2nd location for games after installing 1 game it will then find local game files and use them even if you don't specify the directory, but it needs to install a game there at least once to be aware that other library is there.

You may need to pay careful attention when installing to notice it's using local files, it's near the progress bar in small text but otherwise the only difference to the install process is it's a lot faster.
