Hello!! first time posting here but i have come here often for solutions!
A friends pc had its psu broke so i took it and replace it with an older one that i had spare. after i changed the psu i kept getting the message "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media.." after trying solutions from here and you tube it stopped having this problem, but then i kept getting the "missing bootmgr error " . So i made a windows 7 usb using the tool to repair it at cmd . the disk at first dint appear at the windows after booting from usb. after some tries ( i think i made the hard drive active at some point ) it appeared " windows 7 (recovered) " and i choose it but then i got the error "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows" . used the same version to create the dvd win7 pro sp1. i also typed all the commands to fix bootmgr but the problem persists .. sorry for the log post i hope some one can help me

Solution
Hi there paulkoum88,

Unfortunately, it seems that the HDD is failing. I don't really know if this is related to the PSU change.
If you have some data stored on that drive, my suggestion would be to attach it as a secondary one to another system and try to access the files on it right away. If you can't do that, you can use some data recovery tool: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

After that, you can see whether and what is wrong with it with some of these: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Let me know how this goes,

i can access and save the data but i hoped not to format everything. i have checked the hard drive with some other programs and it passed no problems found. so i think i am doing something wrong with the missing bootmgr part . i will try also what you send me . thanks for the reply

Exactly what "solutions" did you try to fix the original issues? If this happened right after you swapped the power supply, chances are that either the power cable was not seated in the hard drive or some other cable was knocked loose. Unless by some small chance the hard drive failed at the same time. Depending on what you tried, you could have easily either deleted or changed the boot sector or some other files needed for Windows.

I just wanted to make sure you did not run any mbr commands on the drive the first time, looking over connections and such is fine.

You may just need to replace the drive and start with a clean setup of Windows, copy the files from the other drive after that.

There are possible fixes but sounds like you tried them already https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2622803 You can also try the bootrec /fixboot command at a dos prompt in the recovery boot media http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.html
