Hi All,

My current desktop PC looks like it will be breaking down soon (computer hangs on startup occassionally) and since it has been a while since i last built my own rig, considering to upgrade to Intel i5-6500.

My usage is more on surfing the web, skype, programming tools (i.e. Visual Studio, etc), streaming music, etc. Don't do a lot of video rendering or graphic design, however, from time to time i might be working on poster designs but not often. Not looking to OC my rig.

Can someone recommend me a rig for Intel i5-6500?

I am also checking what i can reuse from my current desktop like the Cooler, PSU, SATA2 and SATA3 HDD in my new rig? Any advise? Thanks

Current Desktop:
Cooler: Hyper 212 Plus Cooler Master
PSU: Seasonic x750w 80plus GOLD version
Case: Cooler Master 690 Advanced II
Sata2 HDD: 1 Unit Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 32MB, 1 Unit of WD Blue 1TB 65MB
Sata3 SSD: Silicon Power 256GB
Ram: G.SKILL PI Series 6GB 1600 CL7-8-7-24 (DDR3)
GPU: Palit GTX 460 1GB sonic

Solution
The hanging sounds like a software issue to me. I had a similar problem caused by Acronis backup software, but mine would hang when shutting down.

PCpartpicker didn't have a Singapore selection, so it's in US dollars.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($197.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($57.88 @ OutletPC)

Have you tried a clean install of your OS or running a health check on your C-drive? Do you want a new computer anyway? You didn't say what CPU you currently have. Probably all you will need is the i5-6500, a new MB, DDR4 RAM, and an SSD.

Where do you live and in what currency will you be buying?

Yes, did the above like clean install of OS and health check on all my HDD, but the hanging issue is intermitten. Verified that my monitor is not faulty as well.

Seems i missed out my processor and motherboard. Here are the specs again:
Processor: i7 930 + gigabyte x58a ud3r
Cooler: Hyper 212 Plus Cooler Master
PSU: Seasonic x750w 80plus GOLD version
Case: Cooler Master 690 Advanced II
Sata2 HDD: 1 Unit Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 32MB, 1 Unit of WD Blue 1TB 65MB
Sata3 SSD: Silicon Power 256GB
Ram: G.SKILL PI Series 6GB 1600 CL7-8-7-24 (DDR3)
GPU: Palit GTX 460 1GB sonic

I am living in Singapore and will be buying the parts in Singapore.

This is sort if in the middle. You can go higher or lower. It's a nice MB with upgraded sound (ALC 1150 codec), M.2, USB 3.1, PCIe x4 slot for upgrades.

Thanks for the response.
Possible to re-use my SSD in my current setup? Silicon Power SSD 256GB? Not familiar on how to differentiate between the different brands.

As for the Graphics card, can i reuse that as well? Will it be good enough?

Will the graphics card be good enough to play latest PC games that requires better graphic card like Crysis 3 or Far Cry 3? Just want to make sure that the rig will be able to last for the next few years at the least.

Those recommended are more towards the high end graphic cards? Any other graphic cards that are more mid range? Thanks

What about Asus or Palit graphic cards? Thanks

I see. So I just only need to search for the model number like GTX 1080, RX 480, etc based on those companies. Any particular company is good? Sorry, never really knew much about graphic cards. :)

Also, thinking of getting a Nvidia GTX 750ti 2GB, Nvidia GTX 950 2GB or AMD R7 370 2GB. Does it matter whether it is by Asus, Palit, etc, apart from those you mentioned? Is there a company that does it better, etc?

There can be some differences. Quality of construction, factory overclocking, how the cooling is implemented such as size, quality, and number of fans, silent features, etc. IMO the big 4 are MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, and EVGA. EVGA is known for their customer service.

The Ripjaws V 2400 is actually a little bit better. If the MB is not a Z170, it will downclock to 2133.

I would rather have a MB with the 1150 codec for upgraded audio. These are nice:

Thanks for the information. G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory not available at my location. Next best thing is Corsair Vengenace LPX 2133mhz CL 13 instead.

As for the motherboard, was also considering:

What do you think?

Thanks for your recommendations and advise. Decided to go with a higher end GPU since my current rig is already using GTX 460. So this is my finalised set up. Due to Sandisk X400 not available in my location, decided to go with Samsung 500GB Evo 850 instead which i think should be sufficient.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus H170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengenace LPX 2133mhz 16GB CL 13 (2x8GB)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
GPU: Asus GTX960 Strix DC II 2GB OC DDR5

Thanks!
