Hi all,
I have this 1TB WD external which I have been using for backup purposes. My new computer does not recognize it. It keeps asking to format it. Interestingly, I remember that at first it was occasionally recognizing it, for a couple of times at least but now, it does not. What shall I do? I cannot format it because it consists of backed up stuff.

Thank you in advance.

Hey there, yenalogmen.

Sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your drive.

Is the HDD still recognized with the old computer, or any other computer without an issue? If yes, I'd strongly advise you to backup your data.
Right now, this is not a backup. If you are worried about the data, it sounds like you have it stored only on this drive, which makes it a storage drive and not a backup drive. In order to be a backup, you need to have at least two copies of the same data on to separate places.

I'd also recommend that you try the drive with a different USB cable and different USB ports as well (if this is a desktop computer, try both the front panel USB ports and the ones on the back of the case). If you are still...

If you are still unable to get the drive recognized properly, you should try accessing it via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if you can get to your data and back it up. Another option would be to give it a try with data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html & http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes and don't hesitate to ask if anything comes up.
