Hey guys!
I only just built my own PC for the first time, using components from an older desktop that my dad had put together for me (I had to rebuild it after moving to Russia and having the components sent over by courier)
The fan/heatsink I have fitted now are the default ones that came with my motherboard (a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P Socket AM3+ 7.1 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard). The processor I have fitted underneath is an AMD FX-8350 4GHz Socket AM3+ 8MB Cache Processor.
I was wondering if anyone might please have some general advice for a first-timer replacing a fan/heat sink as well as some purchasing recommendations for what I can get that would be quieter? The current fan is much too loud, even when the computer is idling with no heavy load.

make sure the heatsink base and cpu are clean before applying thermal grease.
check your bios settings (cool & quiet, cpu fan settings etc.), sometimes you can increase the thermal upper limit of the cpu, but beware it doesn't get too hot.
run a cpu temp monitoring program to see if the cooler can cope with the temperatures .
If it's still too loud; go look for a better cpu cooler.

Hello again! I hope you're still following this :)

I was very grateful for the responses and thank you so much, but I actually went on holiday shortly after posting here so I only just got back and took the photos (I was a bit of a nubbins and didn't know what to measure, so I measured the fan and did a 'general' guesstimate measure of the area; probably pretty dumb):

Another question I want to ask is whether I need to replace the heatsink when I get the new fan? I've no real idea what I'm doing; I don't know if other fans will just fit onto the old heat sink or if I need a larger one to reduce its workload? All I know for sure is that, if I replace the heatsink, I believe I need to buy thermal paste? :p
