Good afternoon,

I have been cleaning an old PC in the last few days, which includes the installation of a new SSD. Below the system info:

- Windows 10 home 64-bit
- Intel pentium E5300 @ 2.60GHz
- 4GB DDR2 @ 335MHz
- Biostar G31-M7-TE
- Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT
HDD (initial drive): 500GB Maxtor STM3500418AS
SSD (cloned with macrium reflect): 120gb KINGSTON SV300S37A120

Problem:

Installed the new SSD and removed the HDD( SATA slot1). Now when I turn on the PC, it gets stuck on the hardware monitor.

I already have tried the following things:
1. changing boot order to SSD and disabling all other bootdevices(cd/dvd drive)
2. clearing CMOS by removing the battery.
3. clearing CMOS with the jumper(and ofcourse correcting bootorder etc.)
4. starting in safe mode (F8), PC however does not allow me to do that :'(
5. not relevant for the working of the ssd in general, but i also tried to optimize my OS for the SSD. Only relevant thing I have come across, is the fact that my Biostar MB. does not support AHCI.
6. install another SSD (from my laptop) in the PC, but also this will get stuck at the hardware monitor.
I am still capable to boot windows correctly from the original HDD.

I hope someone can help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Do you know your BIOS version? Is it the latest release and with Biostar especially does it match your board revision ?

I've overcome issues like this by installing cheap SATA cards in older gear, however hopefully it won't come to that.

Thanks for the quick responses.
AMIBIOS
Version: 08.00.14
Build date: 09/25/09

Pretty sure it's not up-to-date. Now I'm pretty new with updating the BIOS with such an old MB. So do you have any advice on how to do this the most efficient way.

Btw, my ssd form the laptop with which I tried to boot the pc aswell, is an samsung ssd 850 pro 128GB (Don't think it had anything to do with the kingston ssd).

@ironsounds
yes with the SSD by itself it gets the same error.

Yes, however that should not be the problem, because 1) it works with my original HDD and 2) the BIOS does recognize the ssd.

My conclusion thus far is that my PC most likely won't boot from any other HDD/SSD than the original one. That means I probably have to do a clean install (with usb or cd) on an empty ssd.
However I don't know how to do that, because i don't have a cd or usb because the OS was already on my pc when I bought it. Therefore I can only reinstall with the recovery partition and got no clue how to put that on a USB or CD mount.

The original HDD still works. When I plug that one in, it will boot. Doesn't matter whether the ssd is installed, as long as the HDD is plugged in, it wil boot.

Yeah that's a bit older but only one revision back from the most current. There are newer versions. Normally the board ships with a utility for XP that you use to flash the BIOS. but that is not be an option.

If you download the the user manual
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=363#download

you'll see that there is a full graphical description of how to update the BIOS using BIO-Flasher which is a pre boot BIOS based utility that can read the downloaded bios file from a USB stick. that link above also has the most current BIOS to download.

I would update it.

Finally... the board DOES support AHCI.. there's a manual in the manual download zip that describes the BIOS layout. SATA AHCI is apparently supported. Get flashed up and we can go through the menu options for the BIOS to get the SATA drive trooping along.

Allright, I did the following:

Installed the new BIOS with a tool on windows(which I booted on the original HDD).
Now it says my version still is 08.00.14, but the build date changed to 02/01/10
Also the startscreen changed to a new Biostar logo. BIOS seems pretty much the same though.

But..... I got a new problem. since i changed my BIOS with te tool I am not able to boot from my HDD anymore. Windows says it needs to recover with the following error code: INNACESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
What's odd is the fact that it gave the same error code with my ssd. I guess that this means it can boot from the ssd now, but windows it not correctly configured anymore.

My apoligies for my lack of knowledge regarding this aspect, but I don't understand correctly.
I done the cmd promt to get in to safemode, but i'm simply not able to put it in AHCI.
In BIOS i do:

MAIN --> IDE configuration, which gives the following:

ATA/IDE Configuration (disable/enhanced/compatible)
Configure sata channels (before PATA/ behind PATA)
Port0 SATA AHCI Speed: GEN 2 (3.0Gb/sec) (cannot change this aspect

below it gives the SATA devices and IDE Channel1 master and slave

got no clue what to do with this.

I believe you need to change the top ATA/IDE configuration "compatible" to turn OFF the AHCI function. I am guessing, but this is in line with other systems I built back in that era. That should put the SATA ports in into vanilla IDE compatible mode.

If you can't do the other work with getting the AHCI function working in Windows the way things are running now, you might have better luck with the system once it boots to follow those instructions, if you so wish.

Alright, it's running on my HDD again! using compatible mode (SATA pri, PATA sec)
I'll be trying to run the steps from ''Enabling AHCI mode AFTER Windows 10 installation'' now.
thanks

sounds stupid again, but if compatible mode is AHCI mode off, then what is AHCI on.... :p
And will that result in the ssd working on the system....
thanks

that would be "enhanced" to turn it back on.

and there's no guarantees this will make the SSD work. In fact I specifically have used the SSD you chose because it doesn't require AHCI to be enabled for some old Lenovo systems I upgrade. On it's own without TRIM it's a good drive with decent garbage collection . With TRIM (AHCI enabled for Windows) they do work better with no long idle periods for garbage collection required. While you may not get everything I said, it can be read about on the net if you want to learn more.

Anyhow, if we can't get the system to boot once you get AHCI working on the hard disk install and THEN CLONE THE INSTALL TO THE SSD AGAIN with the new changes, we need to suspect the cloning process.

P.S. while I try to restart according to the steps in the link, it stays there and just won't shut off and boot again.

Wonderfull, that's exaclty what i'm looking for and in my opinion (for what it's worth regarding this problem) should do the trick in making my MB understand that my ssd is now the drive windows run on.
Currently creating the installation media for the usb, will get back to you once I know more.

Thanks

Alright, I have created an installation disk on a USB. Now when I start the PC, it will direct me to windows, in which I can start the installation.
After setting the correct language I get to the productkey screen, in which I tried to fill it in with my initial windows 7 one. This resulted in going to the next screen in which i could choose to do a recommended install (in which I keep my files etc.) or a advanced install.
The same two options will appear when I say I don't have the key (due to the fact that it is a reinstall....).

Once I choose the installation type it tells me to unplug the installationdisk (USB) and restart the PC, so it will manualy start windows, after which it should be able to start the installation.

The problem however, once I remove the installationdisk(USB) it will get stuck at the hardware screen again........
I guess this means my PC just won't boot from the ssd.

thank you

New info:

Tried a clean install, so only the windows OS. This got me to the next screen in which I could choose the drive/partition in which I wanted to install windows on.
So..... I chose my new SSD and windows was starting to copy the files, updates, etc. on to the SSD.
This went well, until windows wanted to reboot and then again..... the hardware screen or when I got the installationdisk (USB) still plugged in it will direct me again to the start of the installation in which I need to do the settings of the install over again....

This makes sense, because once my SSD can't be booted, it will go to my installdisk, what results in the start of a new install.

Mark RM, thanks alot for your input!
I finally prevailed!!!!!!!

I did the work around with the AHCI again and then a clean install on the formatted SSD.
It finally booted from the SSD after Windows wanted to restart with the install-disk plugged in, and once the PC started I changed the boot order to SSD first and USB second.

And how does the system run?
Absolutely beautifull!!!!

Again thanks a lot!
