Monitor saying "Input not supported"

I recently (and very stupidly) changed my screen resolution to something my monitor can't handle. I tried booting up in safe mode on Windows 10 using the shift+f8 method but never got it to work.

Afterwards I plugged my cable into my TV and I could see my desktop no problem, so as usual I changed my resolution back to what it used to be. It now says "input not supported" on the screen.

Will the attempt to boot into safe mode have prompted this?

EDIT: I have even tried it on the lowest resolution and I still get the same outcome. The monitor was working an hour ago and powers up, so I know it's not broken.

Solution
Ah, there we go then.

For an HP prebuilt, :
1. repeatedly hit "Esc" when the computer is booting up which will open the startup menu.
2. Press F11 to being a system recovery
3. Select "troubleshoot" from the "choose an option" screen.
4. Select "Advanced options" from the "troubleshoot" screen
5. Select "Startup settings" from the "advanced options" screen
6. Select "startup settings" and restart
7. Once the system restarts, you'll be presented with the "startup settings" menu. Press the corresponding F# key for the mode you want to enter (F4 I believe is safe mode)

You should then enter the safemode Windows environment and you can amend your resolution settings.

Let me know if this works?

Just to be clear, you don't see anything on the screen other than "input not supported"? Is this on your TV, monitor, or both?

You don't see the 'splash' screen (usually your motherboard manufacturer or brand, if a pre-built). Can you enter the BIOS?

The resolution selected inside Windows should have no bearing on the BIOS...

I'm assuming, connecting to a TV and a monitor, you're likely using HDMI? Do you have other inputs available on your monitor? DisplayPort, DVI etc?

Thanks for your reply mate.

It's just on my monitor I get the "input not supported" message. It works fine when I use my TV.

I see the splash screen before I have to put in my Windows password, I can load BIOS etc. I am using a DVI port to connect to both screens, and have no other alternative, unfortunately.

If you see the splash screen, you have display - meaning the issue (which I'm sure you knew anyway) is Windows related.

If you can access the BIOS (which isn't dependent on the resolution selected in the OS environment) You should certainly be able to boot in safe mode - while F8 / Shft+F8 are common, there are boards out there requiring F5 and potentially other combos too.

What are you specs? Is this a pre-built? Or a custom build?
If pre-built - what make/model do you have?
If custom - do you know the motherboard make & model?

You just need to get into the OS and set the resolution accurately (for the monitor in question), which should be fairly easy to accomplish in safe mode.
