Ok I have a hp elitebook 8440p. Running windows 7. It says plugged in not charging. It shuts off when plugged into a ac charger randomly.

What i done so far.
Changed chargers. check
uninstalled and reinstalled battery software several times in several orders check
updated the bios (THAT WAS SKETCHY WITH IT SHUTTING DOWN) check
Set it on a industrial fan while in air condioned house to see if it was overheating. Didn't seem to have a affect on it.

Observations
when i unplug it and plug it back in it will charge for a few seconds then switch to not charging.
I don't believe its the charger or jack. I have no clue

Solution
Hello... I'm sorry didn't want sound like a Steven King movie...
Sometime the battery need to be in the charging/power circuits... it's another safety feature you have to put in place B /
Hello... Batteries can fail just like anything else... they have different modes of failure... OPEN (won't take charge) and Shorted (causes power supply and MB shutdowns)
you have done a Good job of troubleshooting your own problem... B ) the next thing on your list is that Battery. B /

I would think the battery wouldn't cause a complete shut down if its plugged into the ac adapter?
i suppose i can have it turned on without the battery and see if it shuts down.

Hello... that would be a great test B ) I want to WARN YOU... Shorted MODE batteries are like TIME BOMBs... DON'T force a battery to Take a charge... it will BLOW UP in your face... Battery explosions release VERY dangerous chemicals and SHARP Plastic parts in the event. Batteries are a necessary Evil... Don't let one bite you. B O

The shutting DOWN of your Laptop and Power supply are Trying to Warn YOU... of a shorted battery? are you LISTENING to their warning?

I have Met/know People Who have been BIT... their Face and Skin is disfigured... They are reminded of the Event... Everytime they have to LOOK in the mirror... Batteries are not Cheap... BUT Much cheaper than Plastic Surgery AND Remorse B O

Ironsounds thanks for the advice.

It shut down with the battery out.

The only thing i can think of is the power management circuit on the motherboard.
But not sure really.
Anyone else have any ideas.
