Java Runtime Environment and Windows Update Failure

Hey all,

I'm having several problems that I suspect may be related but are beyond my abilities to diagnose. This all started with an attempt to install the Java Runtime Environment on this machine. The attempt failed. I tried both the online and offline installers for both the 32bit and 64it apps. I continuously get error 1603, "installation failed to complete".

I've tried just about every solution I can find through google. I've disabled my UAC. I've confirmed that there are no pre-existing JRE files on this computer. I gave all the installers permission to run as admin. I've run registry cleaners. I've unregistered and re-registered Windows Installer. Then I tried making sure that Windows is up to date when something else happened: 17 updates failed, and they fail over and over again. Many of them are security updates. The other is Silverlight.

So the next step in my repertoire is to completely wipe and reformat the C drive, then re-install windows (Win 7 64 bit Home Edition), which does feel a little like the nuclear solution. Before burning down the house, though, I figured I'd ask to see if there are any tech wizard geniuses who might be able to point me in the right direction.

Okay, thanks for tuning in. I will be back regularly as this is somewhat disturbing.

Cheers

There are no error codes for windows update, and I figure if I'm going to bother "repairing" the OS I might as well just go ahead and start over. I keep all my data and the windows "MY" libraries on a separate drive (SSD for the OS, platter for everything else) so it's not an enormous hassle to just wipe and begin again. I was just hoping someone had run into this before or had a clue for a quick fix.
