Crysis 3 GTX 970 stuttering mess!

I brought this game quite a few months back when I had an ATI R9 270X. On playing the opening scene the fps were all over the place, dropping between 60 - 30 fps, so I thought maybe that the 270X couldn't handle the game and I had heard that it was a very demanding game at the time.

I upgraded to a GTX 970 a little while ago which is an awesome card. I just saw Crysis 3 real cheap on Origin so thought I'd give it another go. On the same opening scene it's doing the same thing, fps all over the place. So what the heck, is there a major crippling graphic setting I'm not aware of or something? Is there a known issue with this game? I'm quite keen to play it but I play all my games at 60 fps so this is not acceptable...

Solution
I'm managing to use MSAA 2x, any higher has a performance impact for me. I'm getting a constant 60 fps so far with my current settings and the occasional small drop of 1- 2 fps. I'm using nvidia adaptive vsync. I found a good tweak guide here: http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis3_1.html

Gaming at 60 fps is so much more enjoyable..

My specs are in my sig, cant you see them?

Could you please go on the web and get 'MSI Afterburner' then look on Youtube how to set it up (it only takes 5mins).

Once you have Afterburner set up keep the software running then load up the game and note down below your results:
-GPU temp, GPU VRAM usage, GPU Usage
-CPU core temps, CPU cores usages
-RAM usage
-Framerate

During cutscenes its typical for framerates to jump around or to just generally be low, ignore that, its the fps during gameplay that matters, is gameplay fps fine and do the cut-scenes at-least appear to be smooth?

I have MSI afterburner. Are you meaning to have MSI afterburner track these stats? I can give you some already, I use Precision X and HWMonitor.

GPU temp - max has been 71° average 60°
CPU temp - max 67° average 60°
Ram - 1000mb GPU ram 2000mb
Framerate - swinging wildly, anywhere between 35 - 116 fps with vsync off..

Haven't had any cut scenes yet, it's the gameplay fps that a varying drastically...

You've missed out the CPU core usages and GPU usage.

Hi,
First lets see what is causing the problem, have you had issues like this with other games.Try lowering your resolution and graphic settings to medium and see if the problem persists.Cysis 3 is a hugely demanding game and just about every card not in sli or crossfire struggles, actually many use it for determining gpu performance.
It could be that, but first try lowering your settings.

Max usage for both. Average usage, not sure.

Hi,
like i mentioned plz try lowering your settings and tell whether this happens only in crysis 3.

This is the sort of answer I was looking for. I have heard that it is a very demanding game but I didn't know it required sli setups to max it etc. I don't even know too much about the game to be honest, I've played all the previous titles but I don't recall playing Crysis 3. It looks as though it's still as demanding as when it came out?

It's in the graphic settings I think like you suggest, I've dropped quite a few down to medium and the fps seem pretty stable now. I'm at the part where you first enter New York under the dome, vsync is off and haven't dropped below 60 fps yet now. I'd say the game needs a bit tweaking to find the magic settings...

No I haven't had any issues in my other games quite like this. I mostly get 60 fps with some smallish drops in games like The Witcher 3 and DAI. Battlefield 4 I can run 60 fps all day.

So wow, this game must be the game of all games to test your system out... quite interesting...

Glad to help you out. I am not saying that sli setup is a must, but one can get much better performance in case of this game. So now we can say it is not a problem of your gpu or any hardware. Crysis 3 eats up pretty much of your gpu vram, when vram limit is exceeded stuttering occurs just like in gta 5 which also is demanding. You can try two things: download nvidia geforce experience which sets the settings to give you the good quality with balanced, good performance or else you can manually try lowering some settings. Geforce experience does a better job of setting the right graphics than the auto detect option in the game .If you want more performance,do not have any hardware intensive programs running in the background while playing the game. I hope this link will help you even more.. http://hubpages.com/games-hobbies/tutorial-how-to-get-the-best-graphics-performance-from-crysis-3

Regards.

Just search some reviews of the GTX 970, you will see that in some benchmarks where Crysis 3 was tested at that resolution with max settings including 4xAA the framerate will be near 40 FPS and not much more than that.

Yes I have Nvidia GeForce experience but I hadn't thought to check that as of yet. Really I had thought that with this being an older game that modern systems would run this at max 60 fps no problems. I didn't realise it is still so torturing, I would of had no hope of playing it when it came out on my old machine!

From what I can tell so far the graphics look quite modern as well for an older game. How exactly did they make this game so punishing back then? It seems to max out both gpu and cpu which is crazy.

Are you sure Crysis 3 will use a whole 4GB of vram? I'm pretty sure it was using 2GB last nite when I played. Maybe with the graphic settings set back to max it will want to consume more.. I know what you mean about GTA V, I would always use about 3.8GB vram in that game, if i tried to alt + tab to the desktop it would always crash...

I'm going to check what GeForce Experience recommends...

Hi,there are some more things i mentioned which u can try. Crysis 3 was released in 2013.Even the old crysis 1 is still used by many for bench marking, yes it is hard to believe but it is true,so yes crysis 3 even though it is 3 years old is still very punishing. One solution I found was turning of your anti aliasing completely which helped in a good performance boost. You can try all the other things I mentioned in my other post.
