Why ddr3 Ram works on ddr2 motherboard? On ram slot there's writer ddr2 ram only

The DDR3 Slot is made physically to fit only DDR3 Memory. DDR2 memory differs in size and the notches in a DDR2 RAM vs DDR3 RAM is on different places.
