CPU Voltage too high and PC won't boot up if I don't use "auto voltage".

Hello,

Before my CPU temp was at stable 50-60C whenever I OC it to 4.2ghz, this was years ago like 3yrs ago and this PC is at least 4yrs old now but I changed it back to its default 3.4ghz like a 1-2 years ago so now I decided to OC it again back to 4.2ghz but now It won't boot up or it will crash everytime I stress test it with a 1.160V or a 1.190V. So if I leave it to "auto" on the Voltage, the Voltage will be at least 1.290V and this is with a 4.0ghz test since with 4.2ghz with auto voltage, it will crash my PC.

So I asked my friends who also OC'd their CPU with the same CPU as the one I have and they said that my Voltage is too high which giving very high temperature then they told me to lower it down to at least 1.150 or 1.160 which is the same as them, so I did that but it wont boot up with that kind of voltage.

So right now I'm at the default stock setting with Turbo on and auto voltage, which is right now is at 3.8ghz with 1.180V.

I just want to know whats the problem and whats causing the high voltage, and how can I set it to lower to prevent high temp when I OC it to 4.2ghz.

Thank you.

PC Specs:

CPU: i5 3570k
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77MX-D3H Socket 1155
Ram:16GB DDR3
GPU: GTX 760
Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H100i
PSU: Corsair 850W HX 80+

you have to have high voltage to have a high overclock. 4.2 ghz is almost 25% faster then your stock freq which is a lot so it will require a lot more voltage of course that voltage causes more heat. so usually that heat is what determines what the max clock speed you can run. looks like your trying to push it beyond what it can do.

Ah I see Thank you for the answer, but is my voltage normal for a 3.6 - 3.8ghz at 1.180V which is according to HWMonitor and I see some people able to do 4.2ghz with a low voltage like 1.140-150V is this problem related to my Chip? as in is it bad or at a stage that its pretty old?
