I have a WD external drive with all my files from years ago, all my pictures and stuff. When I plug it in, it is recognized, but it wants me to reformat the drive and won't show me my stuff. I tried it on my laptop and I got the same error asking me to format the drive. I panicked at first, then thought, I have a smart tv. So I plugged it into my TV USB and it's all there. All my pictures, videos and music. So I know my stuff is there, I can see it on my smart tv, but pc's and laptops won't show me my stuff. All I want to do is get it off that drive and then throw it in the trash or do a happy dance on it as soon as my stuff is off of it.

Hi there Jesse_43,

That is unpleasant. :(
You will need to use some partition/data recovery tool in order to retrieve the data stored on the drive. There are many threads in the community on partition recovery.
After you recover your data, you really need to back up what is important. You need to store what you can't afford to loose on at least two places.

Then, you can check the drive's health out with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. Run both short and extended tests: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=wtsfMb

Let me know how this goes,
